The poem's speaker chooses between his new wife Maggie and cigars -- and it is also the source of the immortal line "A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke".

03
Finding

In 1925 年, Por Larrañaga became the first Cuban factory to mechanize cigar production -- importing bunching and wrapper machines from the United States. The motivation was to avoid production interruptions caused by social unrest.

04
Finding

Por Larrañaga Petit Coronas (5⅛" × 42, vitola: Mareva) -- the brand's most recognizable regular-production cigar. In 2006 年 12 月, Cigar Aficionado reviewed Por Larrañaga independently from "Connoisseur's Corner" for the first time, awarding it 91/100 points. Flavors: nuts, light smoke, cedar.

05
Finding

Rudyard Kipling praised Por Larrañaga in his 1886 poem 《The Betrothed》 - the poem describes a man facing the choice of "wife or cigar". A famous line in the poem reads: "There's peace in a Larrañaga, there's calm in a Henry Clay". The same poem also produced the cigar industry's most famous maxim: "A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke".

06
Finding

In 1925, Por Larrañaga became the first Cuban factory to introduce mechanized cigar production - importing rolling and wrapper machinery from the United States. The motivation was to avoid production interruptions caused by labor disputes. The new technology could use the same high-quality Cuban tobacco to produce at about 25% of the cost of the handmade version, and machine operators needed only 2 weeks of training (hand rollers required many years).

07
Finding

In 1925, Por Larrañaga became the first factory in Cuba to introduce machine-rolled cigars - importing rolling and packaging machines from the United States. The new technology reduced production costs to 25% of handmade production, and training machine operators took only 2 weeks (handmade cigar rollers required years). But this revolution was opposed by workers' strikes - cigar rollers strongly protested out of fear of unemployment, and the company was ultimately forced to send the machines back to the United States.

08
Finding

In 2002, Habanos repositioned its strategy - all Por Larrañaga sizes returned entirely to handmade production. The same year, it launched the only short-filler handmade version, Panatelas (later discontinued). Today, all Por Larrañaga are totalmente a mano, long filler - fully returning to the brand's top-tier identity.

09
Finding

Rudyard Kipling's 1886 poem The Betrothed features Por Larrañaga - in the poem, the male protagonist must choose between his wife Maggie and cigars. He writes: "There is peace in a Por Larrañaga, there is calm in a Henry Clay; but the best cigar in an hour is finished and thrown away." In the end, the protagonist chooses cigars, leaving the famous line: "A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke."

10
Finding

Por Larrañaga remains the only cigar brand to have been in continuous production for 191 years (1834-2025) - an unprecedented record in the cigar industry. Any company operating continuously for 191 years is an extraordinary achievement, especially in the cigar industry, which has gone through the end of the colonial era, Revolution, strikes, trademark litigation, and climate change.

11
Finding

Por Larrañaga was founded in 1834 年 by Spanish immigrant Ignacio Larrañaga (who arrived in Cuba in 1825) at 94 O'Reilly Street in Havana -- it is the oldest existing Cuban cigar brand still in continuous production today. According to legend, only Cabañas (no longer extant) was earlier.

12
Finding

Por Larrañaga Galanes (4¾" × 52, vitola: Robusto) - a true Robusto released in 2021 - the brand's epoch-making entry into the large ring gauge era, with Habanos S.A. directly responding to long-term market demand for a "thicker Por Larrañaga". After release, it was extremely sought after.

13
Finding

Por Larrañaga was registered and founded in Havana in 1834 by Spanish immigrant Ignacio Larrañaga - it is the oldest existing Cuban cigar brand still in production, bar none. 6 years earlier than Punch, 11 years earlier than Partagás, and 10 years earlier than H. Upmann.

14
Finding

The historic cigar-industry strike triggered by mechanization: Por Larrañaga workers launched strikes and boycotts out of concern for their professional future, and the company was ultimately forced to send the machines back to the United States. But this "mechanical revolution" was already irreversible -- machines reduced production costs by 25%, and training a machine operator required only 2 weeks (while a cigar roller required years of training).

15
Finding

Today, all Por Larrañaga cigars are handmade long filler -- this is the brand's most important contemporary commitment. All tobacco comes from the Vuelta Abajo region, and production takes place at La Corona Factory, the same factory as Hoyo de Monterrey and Punch.

16
Finding

Por Larrañaga flavor positioning: mild to medium strength - elegant, balanced, smooth, flavorful but not intense. Flavor descriptions: nuts, cream, cedar, light smoke, light coffee, cinnamon, honey finish. It is a representative of the "old gentleman school" of Cuban cigars.

17
Finding

Por Larrañaga Picadores (5" × 48, vitola: Hermosos No.4) - reintroduced in 2014, currently available only through Habanos Specialist and La Casa del Habano channels. Its distinctive cigar band is inspired by the old 1970s Picadores (long discontinued). It is the only Por Larrañaga cigar with a colored cigar band. Flavor: cream, cinnamon, light coffee. About a 40-minute experience.

18
Finding

Por Larrañaga Petit Coronas (5⅛" × 42, vitola: Mareva) - the brand's most acclaimed regular-production model. It received 91 points in Cigar Aficionado's first review in 2006. Flavor: cream, nuts, light smoke. London price about USD $17/stick.

19
Finding

The rollers at the Por Larrañaga factory, worried about their professional future, launched a strike to resist the machines - forcing the company to send the machinery back to the United States! This was one of the most important "human vs machine" events in cigar industry history, and it also caused the brand's attempt at industrialization to fail temporarily.

20
Finding

Por Larrañaga is the true "elder statesman" of the cigar industry - 191 years of continuous production, spanning 5 centuries (19, 20, 21), having gone through Spanish colonial rule, the Spanish-American War, Cuban independence, world wars, Revolution, and trademark litigation, and still rolled today at La Corona factory.

21
Finding

Por Larrañaga Petit Coronas (5⅛" × 42, vitola: Mareva, Petit Corona) - the brand's most consistently well-reviewed regular vitola. In December 2006, Cigar Aficionado gave a positive review to a cigar from the brand for the first time, awarding it 91 points - an exception outside "Connoisseur's Corner". Flavors: nuts, light smoke, cedar, with slight veining.

22
Finding

Por Larrañaga flavor: medium strength, cream, cedar, roasted nuts, and a light smoky finish - a representative of the "elegant" Cuban cigar style. Petit Corona is the most acclaimed regular-production model, receiving 91 points in Cigar Aficionado's first review in 2006.

23
Finding

The brand name "Por Larrañaga" literally translates as "By Larrañaga". In his 1967 年 book The Book of the Cigar Connoisseur, Zino Davidoff claimed that Por Larrañaga was the second registered Cuban cigar brand, after Cabañas.

24
Finding

Por Larrañaga Galanes (4¾" × 52, vitola: Petit Robusto) - a true Robusto launched with great fanfare in 2021. The cigar aficionado community had long wanted a "thicker-ring-gauge Por Larrañaga", and Habanos S.A. finally listened. After release, it immediately became a target of pursuit.

25
Finding

Por Larrañaga Picadores (5" × 48, vitola: Hermosos No.4) -- a Habanos Specialist Exclusive revived in 2014 年. Inspired by 1970s imagery, it is the brand's only cigar with a colored band -- recreating the color configuration of the Picadores discontinued in the 1970s.

26
Finding

In 1960 年, the Cuban government nationalized all cigar companies, and Por Larrañaga was taken into state ownership. At the time of the revolution, Por Larrañaga was Cuba's sixth-largest cigar brand. Production moved from the Carlos III Street factory to the La Corona Factory on Avenida 20 de Mayo, shared with Hoyo de Monterrey, where it remains today.

27
Finding

In 2002, Habanos fully repositioned itself as a luxury brand - all Por Larrañaga vitolas returned to fully handmade production. The same year also saw the launch of the short filler version Panatelas (later discontinued). This was the brand's moment of rebirth.

28
Finding

After the revolution in 1960, the Cuban government nationalized Por Larrañaga. At the time, the brand was Cuba's sixth-largest cigar brand. Production moved from Carlos III Street to La Corona Factory (sharing the same factory with Hoyo de Monterrey and Punch to this day).

29
Finding

Por Larrañaga's nearly 200 years of continuous production is an important milestone in the cigar industry, and even in global luxury goods - it has survived the 古巴 War of Independence, two World Wars, revolution, trademark litigation, mechanization controversies, and climate change.

30
Finding

Por Larrañaga Galanes (4¾" × 52, Robusto) -- a true Robusto specification released with great fanfare in 2021 年 -- the long-called-for "thick-bodied Por Larrañaga version" finally arrived. It immediately became a popular collectible.

31
Finding

Ignacio Larrañaga arrived in Cuba from Spain in 1825. After working in Havana for 9 years, he registered a cigar manufacturing business in 1834. "Por Larrañaga" means "By Larrañaga" in Spanish.

32
Finding

In its early years, the factory was located at 94 O'Reilly Street in Havana. From the beginning, it was known for outstanding craftsmanship and earned the nickname "The University of Havana" -- meaning it was the highest institution of cigar craft.

33
Finding

Por Larrañaga Picadores (5" × 48, vitola: Hermosos No.4, Corona Extra) - relaunched in 2014, today available only at La Casa del Habano and Habanos Specialist. The cigar band design was inspired by 1970s graphics, and it is the only Por Larrañaga with a colored cigar band - all others have gold bands. Flavors: cream, cinnamon, light coffee, a 40-minute experience.

34
Finding

The first factory was located at O'Reilly 街 94 號 in Havana. In 1840, due to increased production needs, it moved to San Miguel 街 58 號. From the beginning, it earned the nickname "The University of Havana" - meaning "the academy of cigars of the highest quality".

35
Finding

After the 1960 (some say 1961) Revolution, the Cuban government nationalized all cigar companies. At the time of the Revolution, Por Larrañaga was Cuba's sixth-largest cigar brand - a major player of the era. Production moved from the Carlos III factory to La Corona Factory (the same factory as Hoyo de Monterrey), where it remains today.

36
Finding

After the Revolution, Por Larrañaga maintained its good reputation through the 1970s, but began an unexplained decline in the 1980s - production fell sharply. In the 1990s, trademark litigation further restricted the number of export countries, leaving almost only the Canadian and Middle Eastern markets. Most products shifted to machine-made or semi-machine-made production.

37
Finding

Por Larrañaga flavor: mild to medium - gentle but rich in flavor. Flavor notes: nuts, cedar, cream, cinnamon, light coffee, light smoke - representing the "elegant gentleman" style of 古巴 cigars.

38
Finding

The Por Larrañaga cigar band has a pure gold-colored design - the brand's most recognizable visual element. "The all-gold cigar band is one of the most easily recognized brands in the cigar industry." Today, some styles add a red-and-gold mix, but pure gold remains the brand's soul.

39
Finding

Por Larrañaga's 190+ years of continuous production history is an almost miraculous achievement in the cigar industry - through Spanish colonial rule, Cuban independence, mechanization strikes, revolution, trademark disputes, market contraction, and product-line relaunches, production has never been interrupted. It is the cigar industry's true "long-lived ironman".

40
Finding

In 2002 年, Habanos S.A. repositioned Por Larrañaga -- all vitolas returned to handmade production (some long filler, some short filler). Also in 2002 年, Panatelas was introduced as the brand's first official short filler product (later discontinued).

41
Finding

In the Habanos system, Por Larrañaga is classified as "Other" - small production and small market share, but to industry insiders it is a "true boutique cigar for connoisseurs". "elder statesman of Cuban tobacco" is the industry's most commonly used description.

42
Finding

The "all-gold" design of the Por Larrañaga cigar band is the brand's core identity - one of the most easily recognizable visual marks in the cigar industry. Today, some Por Larrañaga cigar bands include red elements, but gold remains the brand's main color.

43
Finding

Por Larrañaga MonteCarlos (6¼" × 33, Slim Panetela) - an extremely slender cigar with a 33 ring gauge, representing the brand's "1920s elegant retro" style. It is regarded as one of the most recognizable slim cigars in today's cigar industry.

44
Finding

All Cuban versions of Por Larrañaga are "totalmente a mano con tripa larga" (fully handmade long filler), using all Vuelta Abajo tobacco, and are produced at La Corona factory (the same factory as Hoyo de Monterrey and Punch).

45
Finding

46
Finding

Film master Orson Welles was also a lifelong enthusiast of Por Larrañaga - his office was often filled with Por Larrañaga. The dual endorsement of Kipling and Welles, two cultural giants of the 19th-20th centuries, gave Por Larrañaga a unique position in literary and film circles.

47
Finding

For connoisseurs, Por Larrañaga is "a choice with more gentlemanly taste than Cohiba" - its elegance, balance, and understatement give it a unique position in the Cuban cigar system: it does not have Cohiba's aura of luxury or Bolívar's strength, but it has a historical depth (190+ years) that neither Cohiba nor Bolívar has.

48
Finding

From the beginning, Por Larrañaga was known as "The University of Havana" - this nickname came from the brand's outstanding craftsmanship and its tradition of gathering veteran cigar rollers. It is one of the most historic "institution of excellence"-level nicknames in the cigar industry.

49
Finding

By the late 19th century, Por Larrañaga was already an internationally renowned top-tier brand. Its two most famous admirers: Orson Welles (film director of Citizen Kane) and Rudyard Kipling (Nobel Prize-winning poet). A dual honor spanning literature and cinema.

50
Finding

In the 1970s, the brand still maintained its reputation, but in the 1980s, production dropped sharply without warning for unknown reasons. In the 1990s, trademark litigation restricted Por Larrañaga exports to only a small number of countries (mainly Canada and the Middle East).

51
Finding

In 1920 年, Por Larrañaga acquired a new factory on Carlos Tercero (Carlos III) Street in Havana for US$100,000 -- one of the largest factory investments in the cigar industry at the time, reflecting the brand's determination to expand its scale.

54
Finding

Identifying feature: the all-gold ring - Por Larrañaga's most elegant and most easily recognized visual trademark. Even if the smoker has not removed the cigar band, aficionados can recognize Por Larrañaga at a glance. Today, some sizes incorporate red design elements, but gold remains the spirit of the brand.

55
Finding

Por Larrañaga is said to be the second officially registered Cuban cigar brand after Cabañas - but Zino Davidoff argued in his 1967 book The Book of the Cigar Connoisseur that Por Larrañaga was actually the first registered, even earlier than Cabañas. Cabañas has long been discontinued, so Por Larrañaga is the oldest existing Cuban brand.

56
Finding

Por Larrañaga MonteCarlo (6¼" × 33, slim panatella) -- an ultra-slim, long cigar with a 33 ring gauge, and the brand's most elegant shape. A classic feeling of "former glory".

57
Finding

Although Por Larrañaga is a relatively niche brand within the Habanos system (with a small market share), aged old Por Larrañaga is a true holy grail of cigar collecting -- rare aged versions from a 191-year-old historic brand, plus sizes that have been discontinued or limited, have continued to rise in price.

58
Finding

The brand name "Por Larrañaga" literally translates as "By Larrañaga" (made by Larrañaga) - one of the few "personal brands" in the cigar industry to use the founder's surname directly as the brand name. Zino Davidoff claimed in 《Book of the Cigar Connoisseur》(1967) that Por Larrañaga was the second registered Cuban brand after Cabañas.

59
Finding

In the 1980s, the brand mysteriously entered a period of decline - production dropped sharply for unknown reasons. In the 1990s, trademark disputes restricted Por Larrañaga exports to a few markets such as Canada and the Middle East. Most products became machine-made items for Canadian smokers. This was the lowest point in the brand's history.

60
Finding

Por Larrañaga Montecarlos (6¼" × 33, vitola: Slim Panetela) - another soul of the brand: a slender panetela with a 33 ring gauge, representing the elegant cigar. It can be enjoyed at any time of day, and paired with the gold cigar band, it has a strong period aesthetic.

61
Finding

In 1840 年, the factory moved to 58 San Miguel Street to meet production demand. From the start, Por Larrañaga supplied cigars to intellectuals, financial elites, and ordinary working-class people alike -- an early representative of a "cigar for everyone".

62
Finding

In 1920, the company acquired a larger factory on Carlos III (Carlos Tercero) Street for USD $100,000. This factory became the stage on which the brand entered the industrial era.

63
Finding

Despite its extreme fame at the end of the 19th century, Por Larrañaga always had small production volume - accounting for only 5.3% of total Cuban cigar exports. It was a true "boutique rather than high-volume" brand.

64
Finding

Por Larrañaga's first factory was located at 94 O'Reilly Street in Havana - this historic street later inspired the naming of San Cristóbal de la Habana's O'Reilly Colección Habanos. In 1840, it moved to 58 San Miguel Street to meet the need for expanded production.

65
Finding

For Chinese enthusiasts: Picadores is available only at LCDH and Habanos Specialist, making it "the true insider's Por Larrañaga". Its colorful cigar band pays tribute to a 1970s retro design and is also the brand's only colorful-version identifier.

66
Finding

67
Finding

68
Finding

In the Habanos system, Por Larrañaga is classified as "Other" (a niche brand) - this low-key positioning reflects the brand's enduring philosophy of "boutique rather than high-volume". Over 190 years, the brand has not become larger, but it has maintained quality.

The University of Havana

If Cohiba is the cigar of revolution, and Montecristo is the cigar of literature, Por Larrañaga is "The University of Havana": a cigar brand that has been in continuous production for 191 years, spanning the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, and immortalized in verse by a Nobel Prize-winning poet. Its story proves that the true "elder statesman" of the cigar industry is not the biggest, but the one that has lived the longest.

The story begins in Spain in 1825. Ignacio Larrañaga, a young Spaniard, arrived in Cuba. After working hard in Havana for 9 years, he registered his own cigar manufacturing business in 1834.

"Por Larrañaga" means "By Larrañaga" in Spanish: a simple, direct name.

The Oldest Existing Cuban Cigar Brand

Por Larrañaga occupies an unmatched historical position in the cigar industry:

  • 6 years earlier than Punch (1834 vs 1840)
  • 11 years earlier than Partagás (1834 vs 1845)
  • 10 years earlier than H. Upmann (1834 vs 1844)
  • 41 years earlier than Romeo y Julieta (1834 vs 1875)
  • 132 years earlier than Cohiba (1834 vs 1966)

It is said that Por Larrañaga was the second officially registered Cuban cigar brand, after Cabañas. However, Zino Davidoff, in his 1967 book The Book of the Cigar Connoisseur, argued that Por Larrañaga was actually the first registered brand, earlier than Cabañas.

Cabañas has long since ceased production. Por Larrañaga is therefore the oldest existing Cuban brand.

The Nickname: The University of Havana

From the very beginning, Por Larrañaga was known as "The University of Havana". This nickname came from the brand's exceptional craftsmanship and its tradition of gathering highly experienced torcedores. It is one of the most historically significant "institution of excellence" nicknames in the cigar industry.

The first factory was located at 94 O'Reilly Street in Havana. This historic street later inspired the naming of O'Reilly Colección Habanos by San Cristóbal de la Habana. In 1840, the factory moved to 58 San Miguel Street to meet the demand for increased production.

Kipling's Poem

Rudyard Kipling's 1886 poem The Betrothed features Por Larrañaga as a central presence.

In the poem, the male protagonist must choose between his wife Maggie and cigars. He writes:

"There is peace in a Por Larrañaga, there is calm in a Henry Clay; but the best cigar in an hour is finished and thrown away."

In the end, the protagonist chooses the cigar, leaving behind the famous line:

"A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke."
(A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a true smoking pleasure.)

This line later became one of the most widely circulated quotations in cigar culture. Por Larrañaga was thus permanently written into literary history.

By the late 19th century, Por Larrañaga was already an internationally renowned top-tier brand. Its two most famous admirers were:

  • Orson Welles (film director of Citizen Kane)
  • Rudyard Kipling (Nobel Prize-winning poet)

A dual honor across literature and cinema: a rare cultural status in the cigar industry.

1925: The First Machine-Made Cuban Cigar

In 1870, the brand was acquired by Antonio Rivero Martinez, who later pushed Por Larrañaga to become the first Cuban cigar brand to introduce machine production.

In 1920, the company acquired a larger factory on Carlos Tercero (Carlos III) Street for USD $100,000.

In 1925, Por Larrañaga became the first factory in Cuba to introduce machine-rolled cigars, importing rolling and packaging machines from the United States. The new technology reduced production costs to 25% of handmade production, and training machine operators took only 2 weeks, while handmade torcedores required years.

But this revolution was opposed by worker strikes: torcedores feared unemployment and protested strongly, ultimately forcing the company to send the machines back to the United States.

This is one of the most famous "man versus machine" episodes in cigar history. Por Larrañaga tried, failed, and withdrew the machines. The handmade tradition therefore continued.

After the Revolution: From Glory to Decline to Rebirth

In 1937, the company was acquired by the British firm Morris & Morris, one of the representative cases of British capital entering the Cuban cigar industry.

After the Revolution in 1960 (or, according to some accounts, 1961), the Cuban government nationalized all cigar companies. At the time of the Revolution, Por Larrañaga was Cuba's sixth-largest cigar brand, a major player of its era. Production moved from the Carlos III factory to the La Corona Factory (the same factory as Hoyo de Monterrey), where it remains today.

But the brand then went through a long period of decline:

  • 1970s: Maintained its good pre-Revolution reputation
  • 1980s: Declined inexplicably, with production dropping sharply
  • 1990s: Trademark litigation further limited the number of export markets, leaving it almost only available in Canada and the Middle East. Most products shifted to machine-made or semi-machine-made production

2002 was the moment of rebirth for the brand. Habanos fully repositioned it as a luxury brand, and all Por Larrañaga vitolas returned to fully handmade production. That same year, a short filler version, Panatelas, was also released (later discontinued).

From then on, Por Larrañaga was once again regarded as "one of the most refined Cuban cigars".

Flavor: A Representative of Elegant Cuban Cigars

The Por Larrañaga flavor profile: medium strength, cream, cedar, toasted nuts, and a light smoky finish. It is a representative of the "elegant" style of Cuban cigars.

Its identifying feature is the all-gold cigar band: the most elegant and most easily recognized visual trademark of Por Larrañaga. Even if the smoker has not removed the cigar band, aficionados can recognize Por Larrañaga at a glance. Today, certain sizes incorporate red design elements, but gold remains the spirit of the brand.

Although Por Larrañaga was internationally renowned by the late 19th century, its production volume was always small, accounting for only 5.3% of total Cuban cigar exports. This tradition of "quality over quantity" continues today.

Flagship Products: 4 Core Regular Production Cigars

Por Larrañaga Petit Coronas (5⅛" × 42, vitola: Mareva) — The brand's most highly regarded regular production cigar. Cigar Aficionado gave it 91 points in its first 2006 review, an exceptionally rare high score. Flavor: cream, nuts, light smoke. London price approximately USD $17 per cigar.

Por Larrañaga Montecarlos (6¼" × 33, vitola: Slim Panetela) — Another soul of the brand: a slender 33 ring gauge panetela and a representative of elegant cigars. It can be enjoyed at any time of day, and paired with the gold cigar band, it carries a strong vintage aesthetic.

Por Larrañaga Picadores (5" × 48, vitola: Hermosos No.4) — Reintroduced in 2014, and currently available only through Habanos Specialist and La Casa del Habano channels. Its distinctive cigar band was inspired by the old 1970s Picadores (long discontinued). It is the only Por Larrañaga cigar with a colored cigar band. Flavor: cream, cinnamon, light coffee. Approximately a 40-minute experience.

Por Larrañaga Galanes (4¾" × 52, vitola: Petit Robusto) — A true Robusto launched with great fanfare in 2021. The cigar aficionado community had long desired a "thicker-bodied Por Larrañaga", and Habanos S.A. finally listened. After release, it immediately became a sought-after target.

Edición Regional: The Engine of the Brand's Revival

Since 2006, the brand has appeared frequently in the RE program, with nearly 20 RE cigars released to date, most of them in thicker formats.

Major RE releases:

  • Lonsdales RE Alemania 2006 (Cervantes 42 × 165mm) — The brand's first RE, exclusive to Germany
  • Magnificos RE Reino Unido 2007 Humidor — UK humidor packaging
  • Valiosos RE Suiza 2009 (Pirámides 52 × 156mm, 2,000×25) — The first Swiss RE
  • Small Robustos Humidor RE Italia 2012 — Italy humidor
  • Gran Robusto RE Países Bajos 2017 — Netherlands RE, reflecting the trend toward thicker formats

The success of Galanes 2021 was the result of "thick-format market testing" during the RE period. Habanos saw aficionados' enthusiasm for a thicker Por Larrañaga and finally released it as a regular production cigar.

What the Chinese-Speaking World Should Know About Por Larrañaga

For cigar aficionados in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia:

  1. This is "the oldest existing Cuban cigar brand", worth experiencing at least once for every aficionado: 191 years of continuous production is a record unmatched by any other brand in the cigar industry. Petit Coronas is the ideal entry point, with a history that includes a 91-point Cigar Aficionado score.

  2. Galanes 2021 is a preferred focus for modern Por Larrañaga collecting: the first true Robusto from Por Larrañaga in the 21st century, it immediately became a sought-after target after release. Its aging potential is enormous.

  3. Picadores is exclusive to the Habanos Specialist channel: the only Por Larrañaga with a colored cigar band, featuring a revived 1970s design. Collection-grade rarity.

  4. The cultural bonus of Kipling's poem: for aficionados who love literature, Por Larrañaga is an essential "literary cigar". Rudyard Kipling's 1886 poem forever linked this cigar with the famous line, "A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke."

  5. Authenticity identification: the all-gold cigar band is the core identifier. Counterfeits often show subtle deviations in the gold lettering, spacing, and band thickness. The colored band on Picadores is another unique identifier.

  6. The Dominican version is completely different: In 2016, Altadis relaunched a non-Cuban Por Larrañaga in the Dominican Republic (USD $7 per cigar). It uses Ecuador Connecticut wrapper and has nothing to do with the Cuban version. Taiwan aficionados should distinguish them carefully.

Why Por Larrañaga Is the "Elder Statesman of the Cigar Industry"

Por Larrañaga is not a flashy cigar. It does not have the luxury halo of Cohiba, the mystique of Trinidad, or the forceful impact of Bolívar.

But it has one thing no one else has: 191 years of uninterrupted production history.

For beginners, Por Larrañaga Petit Coronas is the simplest entry point into "the oldest Cuban brand": a history that includes a 91-point Cigar Aficionado score, medium strength, and creamy nutty flavors.

For seasoned connoisseurs, aged old Por Larrañaga is a true holy grail of cigar collecting: rare aged versions of a 191-year-old brand, combined with sizes that have been discontinued or released in limited quantities, with prices continuing to rise.

For Cuba factory-director-level aficionados, Por Larrañaga also has two unique values:

  • It is the true "elder statesman" of the cigar industry: 191 years of continuous production, spanning the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, having lived through Spanish colonization, the Spanish-American War, Cuban independence, the world wars, the Revolution, and trademark litigation, and still rolled today at the La Corona factory. For any enterprise to operate continuously for 191 years is an extraordinary achievement.
  • It is a witness to literature being written into cigar history: Rudyard Kipling's 1886 poem permanently linked Por Larrañaga with the timeless quotation, "A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke." No other brand in the cigar industry can say that it was written into poetry by a Nobel Prize-winning poet.

The young man Ignacio Larrañaga, who came from Spain to Cuba in 1825, still continues his legacy today in every cigar with a gold band: "By Larrañaga."
