01
Finding

The invention of the cigar band is usually credited to H. Upmann or Ramón Allones. The fact is that Ramón Allones was one of the earliest brands to use them systematically -- the impact of this invention is immeasurable: today every cigar in the world has a band, and this tradition can be traced back to this Havana brothers' factory in the 1830s-40s.

02
Finding

Ramón Allones Specially Selected (4⅞" × 50, vitola: Robustos) -- the brand's soul cigar. A classic Cuban Robusto size. Flavors: coffee, marzipan, citrus -- "polite Cuban full-bodied". London price about USD $24/stick. It remains the brand's most recognizable regular-production cigar today.

03
Finding

Ramón Allones invented the "8-9-8 three-layer stacked box" - 8 cigars on the bottom layer + 9 in the middle layer + 8 on the top layer, for a total of 25 cigars. This packaging format is still used by many Cuban brands today and is one of the cigar industry's most classic boxing formats.

04
Finding

Ramón Allones was the first cigar brand to use full-color lithograph brand labels on cigar boxes - this innovation was later adopted throughout the cigar industry. It was a pioneer of visual branding in the cigar industry.

05
Finding

Ramón Allones was founded in 1837 in Havana by the Spanish Galician immigrant brothers Ramón Allones and Antonio Allones - it is the second-oldest Cuban cigar brand, behind only Por Larrañaga (1834).

06
Finding

Ramón Allones was founded in Havana in 1837 by the Galician (Galicia, northern Spain) brothers Ramón and Antonio Allones -- it is the second-oldest surviving Cuban cigar brand (after Por Larrañaga, 1834).

07
Finding

Ramón Allones is the legendary brand of the cigar industry's "three great firsts": 1) the first to use colored lithographs on cigar boxes (colored lithographs for box art), 2) the first to use cigar bands on cigars (cigar bands), 3) the first to use 8-9-8 three-layer box packaging (8+9+8=25 cigars) -- all three became global standards in today's cigar industry.

08
Finding

Ramón Allones is the brand with the most releases in the Habanos Edición Regional series -- "by far the most popular choice for Regional Edition cigars, generally with several new vitolas created every year". Multiple Ramón Allones RE cigars are released every year.

09
Finding

Ramón Allones is also considered the first brand to use "cigar bands" on cigars - the small paper bands found on all cigars today. If this claim is correct, Ramón Allones is a foundational brand in modern cigar packaging design.

10
Finding

Ramón Allones was founded in 1837 in 哈瓦那 by the 加利西亞 (Galicia, 西班牙西北部) brothers Ramón Allones and Antonio Allones - it is the second-oldest 古巴 cigar brand (after Por Larrañaga 1834). 3 years earlier than Punch, and 7 years earlier than H. Upmann.

11
Finding

Ramón Allones is one of the most revolutionary innovators in the cigar industry - traditionally considered to be: (1) the first to decorate cigar boxes with color lithography, (2) the first to add cigar bands to cigars, (3) the first to use the "8-9-8" three-layer stacking box-packing method - although these three "firsts" are disputed by other brands, Ramón Allones was indeed an early promoter.

12
Finding

Ramón Allones Specially Selected (4⅞" x 50, vitola: Robusto) -- the brand flagship, regarded as the "benchmark for full-strength Cuban Robusto." Released in 1975 to replace the old Specially Selected. Flavor: fruit intensity, smoke, balance, cocoa, and a coffee finish. London price is about USD $24 per cigar.

13
Finding

Ramón Allones Specially Selected (4⅞" × 50, vitola: Robustos) - the brand's most representative Robusto, affectionately called "RASS". Officially launched in 1975 年 (replacing the old version discontinued in 1972 年, but a nearly identical size had existed since the 1930 年代) - meaning the Ramón Allones flagship cigar has sold strongly for nearly 100 years. Flavor: wood, earth, citrus, 45-minute experience.

14
Finding

The invention of the cigar band transformed the entire cigar industry - before Ramón Allones, cigars had no bands, and smokers' fingers would be stained yellow by tobacco when smoking. Ramón Allones solved this problem by adding cigar bands, which then became a global standard in the cigar industry. All cigars today benefit from this invention.

15
Finding

After Altadis acquired a controlling stake in Habanos S.A. in 2001, many Ramón Allones sizes were discontinued -- including the highly regarded Coronas and the brand's pioneering 8-9-8 size. Today the regular line has only 3 offerings left -- the lowest point in the brand's history.

16
Finding

World War II severely damaged Ramón Allones' position in the British market -- wartime currency controls prohibited the import of cigars from Cuba, and imports did not resume until 1952. By 1957, Ramón Allones' size options had been reduced from 62 to 10.

17
Finding

Ramón Allones Specially Selected is one of the benchmarks in the Cuban Robusto tier -- it has repeatedly received 91-94 points from Cigar Aficionado and other review systems. RASS aged 5-10 years is considered essential by collectors, viewed as the "evolution path from entry to mastery in aged Cuban cigars".

18
Finding

Ramón Allones Gigantes (7⅝" × 49, vitola: Prominentes, Double Corona) - another flagship of the brand, a 194mm Cuban Double Corona. Released in 1978 to replace the short-lived 1972-78 Gigantes (1). More balanced than a Robusto, with added spice and vanilla. 倫敦 price is about USD $37/stick.

19
Finding

The 8-9-8 packaging method (8 cigars on the bottom layer, 9 in the middle, and 8 on top, for a total of 25) was pioneered by Ramón Allones. This stacking method provides optimal airflow between cigars, preventing mold and preserving freshness. Today, brands such as La Gloria Cubana and Partagás still use the iconic 8-9-8 packaging format.

20
Finding

After Altadis acquired a controlling stake in Habanos in 2001, most Ramón Allones sizes were discontinued -- including the classic Coronas and the 8-9-8 size invented by the brand. It was the heaviest blow in the brand's wave of discontinuations.

21
Finding

Ramón Allones Gigantes (7⅝" × 49, vitola: Prominentes, Double Corona) - the brand's most imposing Double Corona size - ranked alongside Partagás, Punch, and Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona as the "four major representatives of Cuban Double Corona". After the old version was discontinued in 1972 年, the new version was launched in 1978 年 and continues to this day. 90+ minute experience, a true "luxury cigar".

22
Finding

In 1927, the brand was acquired by the Cifuentes family (owners of Partagás) and moved to the legendary Partagás factory for production - a continuity that has lasted 98 years to the present day.

23
Finding

The brand changed hands many times during its history - ownership changed several times between 1837-1911. In 1911 it was acquired by the 英國 company Hunters, marking the brand's entry into its "most successful period" - becoming one of the world's largest cigar brands, especially with a large following in 英國.

24
Finding

The brand was eventually acquired by the Cifuentes family, and production moved to the legendary Partagás Factory. Ramón Allones is still produced at the Partagás Factory today - this production relationship makes Ramón Allones, Partagás, Bolívar, and La Gloria Cubana the "four brothers of the same factory".

25
Finding

Ramón Allones flavor positioning: medium-full to full - slightly stronger than Partagás, and in its blend it shares the characteristics of the Partagás Factory. Flavor notes: rich, complex, cedar, leather, coffee, dark chocolate, earth, spice - a representative of "power-oriented" 古巴 cigars.

26
Finding

After Altadis acquired a controlling stake in Habanos S.A. in 2001 年, most Ramón Allones production sizes were gradually discontinued - including the most popular Coronas, and even the 8-9-8 size invented by the brand itself. It was the biggest streamlining in the brand's history.

27
Finding

Ramón Allones flavor: medium-full to full -- one of the stronger factions among Cuban cigars. Its flavor is close to Partagás (after all, the same factory): spice, strength, earth, leather, roasted nuts, light floral notes, and a cocoa-coffee finish. Slightly softer than Bolívar, slightly stronger than Partagás.

28
Finding

Ramón Allones flavor positioning: full strength (full-bodied) -- "intense, complex, deeply layered" (rich, complex, deeply satisfying). Flavor notes: strong coffee, spice, leather, dark chocolate, cedar, nuts, citrus. The blend shares characteristics with Partagás (same factory), but is more direct and sharper.

29
Finding

Ramón Allones Specially Selected is one of the most frequently recommended "best aged Cuban cigars" on cigar ageing discussion forums -- RASS aged 5-15 years is regarded as a sacred item among collectors.

30
Finding

"8-9-8" three-layer stacking box-packing: a special stacking method of 8 cigars on the bottom layer + 9 in the middle layer + 8 on the top layer - allowing 25 cigars to keep a perfect shape, breathe, and avoid deformation. Ramón Allones is the creator of this packaging method (although other brands such as Partagás and La Gloria Cubana later adopted it as well).

31
Finding

Ramón Allones Belicoso UK Market (c2005) -- a Belicoso format released exclusively for the UK market -- no extra cigar band and no special packaging. It is considered the prototype of the Edición Regional program -- the "ancestor" of the cigar industry's RE series.

32
Finding

33
Finding

38

39
Finding

40
Finding

The 8-9-8 Cabinet Selection format - the cigar named after the packaging method pioneered by Ramón Allones itself - was discontinued in the mid-1970s. This is an irony of cigar history: the brand that invented 8-9-8 discontinued its own 8-9-8 format.

A Legendary Brand Behind Three Major Firsts in the Cigar Industry

If Cohiba is the revolutionary cigar, and Por Larrañaga is the oldest cigar, then Ramón Allones 雷蒙阿羅尼斯 is the "cigar that established the aesthetics of modern cigar packaging"--a legendary brand that, 188 years ago, invented packaging standards still used across the global cigar industry today, was revered as a legend in the British market, nearly disappeared during World War II, and remains a benchmark for full-strength Cuban Robusto cigars.

The story begins in Havana in 1837. The Galician brothers Ramón and Antonio Allones--born in Galicia, Spain--founded Ramón Allones in Havana. This was only 3 years after Por Larrañaga (1834), and 3 years before Punch (1840)--making it the second-oldest surviving Cuban cigar brand.

But Ramón Allones' true historical status is not about being "old"--it is about how it changed the packaging aesthetics of the global cigar industry.

The "Three Major Firsts" of the Cigar Industry

Ramón Allones is the legendary cigar brand behind the industry's "three major firsts":

1️⃣ The first to use colored lithographic printing on cigar boxes

In the 1830s and 1840s, cigar boxes were mostly plain, undecorated wooden boxes. The Ramón Allones brothers were the first to use colored lithographic printing on cigar boxes (colored lithographs for box art)--turning cigar boxes into works of art.

The exquisite colored printing, royal crests, and textual ornamentation seen on Cuban cigar boxes today--all originate from this Ramón Allones invention of the 1830s.

2️⃣ The first to use cigar bands on cigars

The invention of the cigar band is usually credited to H. Upmann or Ramón Allones. The fact is that Ramón Allones was one of the earliest brands to use them systematically.

The influence of this invention is immeasurable: today, every cigar in the world carries a band, and this tradition can be traced back to this Havana brothers' factory in the 1830s and 1840s. The cigar band is one of the core identifying elements of cigar culture.

3️⃣ The first to use 8-9-8 three-layer stacked packaging

The 8-9-8 packaging method (8 cigars on the bottom layer, 9 in the middle, 8 on top, for a total of 25) was pioneered by Ramón Allones. This stacking method provides optimal ventilation between cigars, helping prevent mold and preserve freshness.

Today, brands such as La Gloria Cubana and Partagás still use the iconic 8-9-8 packaging format--all of which continues Ramón Allones' invention from the 1830s.

The Coat of Arms of the Spanish Royal Family

Box design: Ramón Allones cigar boxes bear the coat of arms of the Spanish royal family--commemorating the brand's Spanish Galician origins. This design has remained almost unchanged for 188 years--making it one of the most historically significant visual trademarks in the cigar industry.

Cigar band features: a golden shield on a red background, encircled by the wording "Ramon Allones Habana", with a gold decorative border. It is one of the most historically evocative red-and-gold color schemes in the cigar industry.

1927: Moving to the Partagás Factory

Ramón Allones changed ownership countless times throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, but was eventually acquired by the Cifuentes family--the same family that also owned La Gloria Cubana and Bolívar. In 1927, production was moved to the Partagás factory, where it is still produced today.

From that point on, Ramón Allones and Partagás became "twin brands from the same factory"--owned by the same Cifuentes family, produced in the same factory, and belonging to the same flavor family (the strong school). Enthusiasts who like Partagás usually also like Ramón Allones--one of the most perfect "brand pairings" in the cigar industry.

The Peak and Collapse of the British Market

In the early 20th century, Ramón Allones was very popular in the British market--one of the most beloved Cuban brands in Britain at the time. The 1924 catalogue listed 62 different sizes--one of the richest product lines in the cigar industry at that time.

But World War II severely damaged Ramón Allones' position in the British market--wartime currency controls prohibited the import of cigars from Cuba, and imports did not resume until 1952. By 1957, Ramón Allones' size options had fallen from 62 to 10.

Although the brand survived after the war, its golden age had passed.

Revolution and 21st-Century Reduction

On September 15, 1960, the revolutionary government fully nationalized the Cuban cigar industry--including the Partagás factory, where Ramón Allones was still produced. Ramón Allones was one of the brands selected for continued production.

After Altadis acquired a controlling stake in Habanos S.A. in 2001, many Ramón Allones sizes were discontinued--including the highly regarded Coronas and the brand's own pioneering 8-9-8 format. Today, only 3 regular-production cigars remain--the lowest point in the brand's history.

One of the great ironies of cigar history: the brand that invented 8-9-8 discontinued its own 8-9-8 format.

Flavor: A Benchmark of Full-Strength Cuban Cigars

Ramón Allones flavor: medium-full to full--one of the stronger schools among Cuban cigars.

Its flavor is close to Partagás (after all, they are made in the same factory): spice, strength, earth, leather, roasted nuts, light floral notes, and a cocoa-coffee finish. Slightly softer than Bolívar, slightly stronger than Partagás--positioned between the two.

All Cuban Ramón Allones cigars are "totalmente a mano con tripa larga" (fully handmade, long filler), using entirely Vuelta Abajo tobacco.

Flagship Products: The 3 Regular Productions

Ramón Allones Specially Selected (4⅞" × 50, vitola: Robusto) -- the brand flagship, regarded as the "benchmark for full-strength Cuban Robusto cigars". Released in 1975 to replace the earlier Specially Selected. Flavor: fruity intensity, smokiness, balance, cocoa, and a coffee finish. London price around USD $24 per cigar.

Ramón Allones Specially Selected is one of the most frequently recommended "best aged Cuban cigars" on cigar aging discussion forums--5-15-year-aged RASS is regarded by collectors as sacred.

Ramón Allones Gigantes (7⅝" × 49, vitola: Prominentes, Double Corona) -- the brand's other flagship, a 194mm Cuban Double Corona. Released in 1978 to replace the short-lived Gigantes (1) from 1972-78. More balanced than the Robusto, with added spice and vanilla. London price around USD $37 per cigar.

Ramón Allones Small Club Coronas (4⅜" × 42, vitola: Minutos, Petit Corona) -- the brand's entry-level cigar. A 25-35 minute experience. Around USD $14 in London. It is the simplest entry point into the full-strength world of Ramón Allones.

Edición Regional: The Engine of Brand Revival

In the Habanos system, Ramón Allones is classified as Other (niche)--but it is one of the most frequently appearing brands in the Edición Regional program.

Major RE releases:

  • Ramón Allones Belicoso UK exclusive--possibly the prototype of the Edición Regional program. Before the formal RE program, this Belicoso format was imported only to the United Kingdom
  • RE Italia 2005 (500 numbered boxes) -- one of the brand's early RE releases
  • Eminencia RE Suiza 2005/2007 (Franciscos, 1,200-1,221×25) -- another early RE from the brand
  • Allones Superiores LCDH Exclusivo 2010--a global LCDH exclusive, initially declared as a limited release of 5,000 boxes, and still produced in limited quantities today

Allones No.2 (2019) Pirámide format--a modern Pyramid format released in 2019--is one of the brand's rare expansions into thicker ring gauges.

What the Chinese-Language World Should Know About Ramón Allones

For cigar enthusiasts in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia:

  1. This is a "benchmark full-strength Cuban Robusto" that belongs in any serious collection: if you already like Partagás D4, Ramón Allones Specially Selected (RASS) is the representative work--same factory, same flavor family, same rollers.

  2. Aged RASS is a sacred cigar for collectors: 5-15-year-aged Specially Selected is one of the most frequently recommended "best aged Cuban cigars" on cigar aging discussion forums. If you see a 5+ year aged version, do not hesitate.

  3. Gigantes is a preferred choice for Cuban Double Corona collections: 194mm in length, slightly stronger than Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona, and slightly more balanced than Punch Double Corona--a brand Double Corona devotees should not miss.

  4. Small Club Coronas is the best entry point for "full-strength beginners": for newcomers who have never had a full-strength Cuban cigar, Specially Selected and Gigantes may be too strong. Small Club Coronas offers a 25-35 minute experience at a more accessible price, making it the best starting point for learning the Ramón Allones flavor family.

  5. Authenticity identification: the golden shield on a red background cigar band is the brand's core identifier. Counterfeits often show deviations in the details of the golden shield, the shade of red, and letter spacing. Also pay attention to the Spanish royal coat of arms on the box--a historical trademark of 188 years.

  6. Pronunciation: Ramón Allones is pronounced "ah-yo-ness" (雷蒙·阿羅內斯)--in Spanish, "ll" is pronounced like a y. Many enthusiasts in Taiwan pronounce it incorrectly; knowing the pronunciation is a marker of identity.

Why Ramón Allones Is the "Founder of Cigar Packaging Aesthetics"

Ramón Allones is not a showy cigar. It does not have the luxury aura of Cohiba, nor the mystique of Trinidad.

But it has a historical position that no other brand in the cigar industry can match: every cigar in the world today carries Ramón Allones DNA--colored printed boxes, cigar bands, and 8-9-8 packaging. These three global standards were all invented by the Ramón Allones brothers in the 1830s and 1840s.

For newcomers, Ramón Allones Small Club Coronas is the most economical entry point into "full-strength Cuban cigars"--a 25-minute experience that will not scare beginners away.

For seasoned aficionados, an aged Specially Selected is sacred, Gigantes is a Double Corona benchmark, and Allones Superiores LCDH is a rare collectible.

For master-level Cuban cigar enthusiasts, Ramón Allones also has two unique values:

  • It is the founder of cigar packaging aesthetics--when you see colored printing on any cigar box, a cigar band, or 8-9-8 stacked packaging, what you are seeing is the continuation of the inventions created by the Ramón Allones brothers in the 1830s and 1840s. No other brand in the cigar industry can match this level of influence
  • It is the cigar industry's most perfect "Partagás pairing"--owned by the same Cifuentes family, produced in the same factory, and part of the same flavor family. For enthusiasts who love strong Cuban cigars, a collection without Ramón Allones is incomplete

Those two brothers who came from Galicia to Havana in 1837 did not merely open a cigar factory--they redefined the visual and packaging aesthetics of the global cigar industry. Every cigar today carries their shadow.
