01
Finding

Punch was registered in Havana in 1840 by the German Stockmann - it is the third-oldest surviving Cuban cigar brand, after Por Larrañaga (1834) and Ramón Allones (1837). It is 4 years earlier than H. Upmann (1844) and 5 years earlier than Partagás (1845).

02
Finding

Punch Punch (5⅝ × 46, vitola: Corona Gorda) -- the brand's soul cigar. One of the original five stars in Cigar Aficionado's 1992 "Cuba's Star Cigars", listed alongside Cohiba Robusto, Cohiba Esplendido, Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona, and Montecristo No.2. Flavor: wood, nuts, floral aroma -- a standard model for Cuban Corona Gorda.

03
Finding

In 1884 Manuel López Fernández acquired Punch - he was the younger brother of Fernando López Fernández, who ran the famous Juan Valle y Cía cigar company. Manuel López's name still appears on Punch cigar bands and boxes today - one of the most enduring personal brand marks in the cigar industry (141 years).

04
Finding

The brand name comes from the 17th-century English puppet-theater character Mr. Punch - this clown character was known for "loudly beating his wife Judy" (the Punch and Judy puppet show), popular in Britain from the 17th century to the 19th century. When Stockmann named it, he was targeting the British market - Punch was from the beginning a "cigar designed for the British".

05
Finding

Common misconception: Punch cigars were not named after the British satirical magazine of the same name, Punch - the magazine was founded in 1841, one year later than the cigar. The correct causality is that "both the magazine and the cigar were named after the same Mr. Punch puppet character".

06
Finding

After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, Fernando Palicio voluntarily left Cuba for Florida and sold the brands to the Villazon family. In 1969 the first Honduran-edition Punch was made at the HATSA factory by Frank Llaneza (cigar master) - introduced at the same time as Hoyo de Monterrey.

07
Finding

Punch flavor positioning: medium-bodied -- slightly stronger than Hoyo de Monterrey and milder than Bolívar. Flavor notes: wood, nuts, light floral aroma, cedar, light coffee, cream, lightly sweet smoke -- a representative of "English gentlemanly taste", especially suited to the British market.

08
Finding

In 1930 Fernández, Palicio y Cía. acquired Punch - this company also owned multiple brands such as Belinda and, from 1931, Hoyo de Monterrey. From then on, Punch and Hoyo de Monterrey have shared a factory to this day.

09
Finding

When Winston Churchill visited Havana, he also visited the Punch factory on Monte y Zulueta street -- he was one of Punch's lifelong enthusiasts. Punch named one of its vitolas "Churchill" (7" × 47), making it another Cuban brand besides Romeo y Julieta to use the Churchill name.

10
Finding

Punch Double Corona (7⅝ × 49, vitola: Prominentes) -- the same format as Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona, and Punch's flagship Double Corona. Cigar Aficionado has given it 90+ points multiple times -- one of the standard Cuban Double Corona cigars.

11
Finding

The Mr. Punch image on Punch cigar boxes - traditional clown attire, holding a cigar, with an "unmistakably sly smile" at the corner of his mouth - is one of the most recognizable visual assets in the cigar industry. It has been used from 1840 to the present, 185 years.

12
Finding

Punch Churchill (7" × 47, vitola: Julieta No.2) -- the brand's Churchill format, commemorating Churchill's visit. A 90-minute experience and a long-format expression of the full Punch flavor profile.

1996
No. 13

1996 年 Llaneza sold Villazon to General Cigar Company -- today's Honduran version of Punch is made by General Cigar (a subsidiary of Scandinavian Tobacco Group). The Cuban version is still produced by Habanos S.A. Today's "two Punch" structure continues to this day.

14
Finding

Today's Cuban Punch is produced at the La Corona factory shared with Hoyo de Monterrey (Centro Habana district, Havana). All Cuban versions are "totalmente a mano con tripa larga" (entirely handmade, long filler). All tobacco leaves come from the Vuelta Abajo region.

15
Finding

In 1958 the Fernández, Palicio y Cía. group (Punch + Hoyo + La Escepción + Belinda) accounted for 13% of Havana's total cigar exports - one of the second-largest groups in Cuba at the time (alongside the Cifuentes group).

16
Finding

Punch is a frequent presence in the Edición Regional series (regional limited editions) within the Habanos system -- this is the brand's most important source of rare collectibles. Every year, special Punch formats are made for specific national markets; the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Mexico, and multiple countries in Asia have all had Punch RE releases.

17
Finding

Punch Néctares No.50 (released in 2025 年) -- launched to commemorate the first Cuban Regional Edition by an Irish Habanos Specialist, and the brand's latest limited release. Robusto Extra format, ring gauge 50.

18
Finding

In the Habanos classification system, Punch is a "Value brand"; previously it was a "Multi-Local Brand" -- meaning it has strong markets in multiple regions (the UK being the most important), but is not globally unified in the same way as Cohiba/Montecristo. This positioning makes Punch relatively approachable in price and a quality "everyday cigar" choice.

19
Finding

Although Punch Punch is medium in strength, because of its high standards for quality (the Cifuentes-Palicio group heritage), its aging potential is excellent - Punch Punch aged 5-10 years reaches complete layers of wood, nuts, and floral aromas, and is recognized by collectors as an "elegant-style representative of aging".

20
Finding

Punch Punch 48 (48 ring gauge version) -- slightly thicker than the original Punch Punch (46 ring gauge), released in recent years, with a more approachable price and still good complexity; it is the "contemporary version of Punch Punch".

21
Finding

Punch 48 (4½ × 48, vitola: Petit Robustos) -- a modern short, thick format that fits the contemporary "Petit Robusto" trend, offering a 30-40 minute experience.

22
Finding

Short de Punch (4½ × 50, vitola: Petit Robusto) -- a short, thick cigar, representative of modern cigar trends and the brand's representative work entering the "short smoke era".

23
Finding

Two global limited editions of Punch Edición Limitada: 2013 年 Serie d'Oro No.2 and 2017 年 Regios de Punch. These are relatively rare Punch limited editions within the EL series.

24
Finding

Punch Super Selection No.2 (vitola: Mareva, Petit Corona) -- a classic Petit Corona-format Punch, offering a 30-45 minute short smoking experience, and the best choice for "appreciating Punch flavor in a short time".

1874
No. 25

1874 marked its first change of ownership, when early cigar-industry merchant Luis Corujo acquired the Punch brand. In the 1860-70s, the brand had belonged to B. Perera y Ca. (the factory at 138 Gervasio Street, Havana). Before the Revolution, Punch moved through different factories in Havana.

26
Finding

The Honduran version of Punch was first made in 1969 年 by former Villazon factory owner Frank Llaneza -- a blend he personally designed, using Ecuadorian wrapper + Honduran/Nicaraguan/Dominican filler, positioned as richer and stronger than the Cuban version. It is one of the early representative works of the Honduran cigar industry.

27
Finding

In 1898 Punch was produced at the J. Valle y Ca. factory (28 Rayo Street), offering as many as 143 standard sizes and shapes at the time - one of the richest product lines in the early cigar industry.

28
Finding

Punch Triunfos (Petit Corona) - a size newly added to the Cuban Punch regular series in 2025, reflecting the brand's continued updating of its product line.

29
Finding

Punch has deeper market roots in the UK than any other Cuban brand. UK market versions usually use red cigar bands (other markets use brown), making it one of the deepest links between British culture and the Cuban cigar industry over the past 185 years.

30
Finding

Manuel López retired in 1924 and handed the brand to Esperanza Valle Comas (a member of the Valle family), but she held it for only a few years before encountering the 1929 Great Depression and stock-market crash. The Cuban cigar industry faced severe financial difficulties.

A British Puppet and a Cuban Cigar

If Romeo y Julieta is Churchill's cigar, and H. Upmann is Kennedy's cigar, then Punch is the true "British cigar" - a Cuban brand founded by a German, named after a British puppet, designed for the British market, and beloved by British gentlemen for 185 years. Its story proves that cigar culture has never belonged to a single nation.

The story begins in 1840. A German named Stockmann registered the Punch brand in Havana - 4 years earlier than H. Upmann (1844), and 5 years earlier than Partagás (1845). Today, Punch is the third-oldest surviving Cuban cigar brand, after only Por Larrañaga 1834 and Ramón Allones 1837.

But Stockmann did not choose the name casually. He was targeting the largest cigar market of the time: Britain. He used a character familiar to the British since the 17th century: Mr. Punch.

Mr. Punch: A 17th-Century British Puppet

Mr. Punch is the main character of the 17th-century British puppet show Punch and Judy - a traditional clown-like figure with a violent temper, known for "loudly beating his wife Judy" (a premise that is, of course, unacceptable by modern standards). From the 17th century through 19th-century Britain, Mr. Punch was one of the most common characters in British street performances, fairs, and household entertainments.

Stockmann named his cigar after this character with a clear purpose: to make British buyers feel an immediate sense of familiarity.

The image of Mr. Punch on the cigar box - in traditional clown costume, holding a cigar, with an "unmistakably sly smile" at the corner of his mouth - became one of the most recognizable visual assets in the cigar industry. It has been used continuously from 1840 to the present, for 185 years.

Not the Magazine - The Magazine and the Cigar Used the Same Character

One of the most common misunderstandings in the cigar world is this: "Punch cigars were named after the British satirical magazine Punch."

This is wrong.

The correct timeline:

  • 1840: Stockmann registered Punch cigars in Havana
  • 1841: The British magazine Punch was founded

The magazine came one year after the cigar. Both the magazine and the cigar were named after the same Mr. Punch puppet character. But because both used the same clown image (holding a cigar), later generations often mistakenly assumed that the cigar copied the magazine.

1884: The Era of Manuel López Fernández

In 1874, the brand changed hands for the first time, when early cigar merchant Luis Corujo acquired Punch. But the person who truly made Punch take off was Manuel López Fernández, who acquired Punch in 1884.

He was the younger brother of Fernando López Fernández, who operated the famous Juan Valle y Cía cigar company. Manuel López's name still appears on Punch cigar bands and boxes today - one of the most enduring personal brand marks in the cigar industry (141 years).

The López era allowed Punch to truly conquer the British market. In 1898, Punch was produced at the J. Valle y Ca. factory (28 Rayo Street), and at the time offered as many as 143 standard sizes and shapes - one of the richest product lines in the early cigar industry.

Manuel López retired in 1924 and handed the brand to Esperanza Valle Comas (a member of the Valle family), but she held it for only a few years before encountering the 1929 Great Depression and stock market crash.

1930: The Connection with Hoyo de Monterrey

In 1930, Fernández, Palicio y Cía. acquired Punch - a company that also owned multiple brands including Belinda, and from 1931 onward also acquired Hoyo de Monterrey.

From then on, Punch and Hoyo de Monterrey have shared factories to this day - a sister-brand relationship in the cigar industry spanning 95 years. Today, both brands are produced at Havana's La Corona factory in the Centro Habana district.

In 1958, the Fernández, Palicio y Cía. group (Punch + Hoyo + La Escepción + Belinda) accounted for 13% of Havana's total cigar exports - one of the second-largest Cuban groups of the time (tied with the Cifuentes group).

Churchill and Punch Churchill

Churchill's love of Cuban cigars is well known - he primarily loved Romeo y Julieta, but he was also a lifelong admirer of Punch.

When Churchill visited Havana, he also visited the Punch factory (located at Monte y Zulueta Street). Punch named one of its vitolas "Churchill" (7" × 47, Julieta No.2) - making it another Cuban brand besides Romeo y Julieta to use the Churchill name.

This double honor gave Punch a unique position in the British market - for British gentlemen, it was "the other brand Churchill smoked".

Revolution: The Birth of Two Punches

After the 1959 Revolution, Fernando Palicio voluntarily left Cuba for Florida and sold the brand to the Villazon family. In 1969, the first Honduran version of Punch was made at the HATSA factory by Frank Llaneza (cigar master) - released in the same period as Hoyo de Monterrey.

The Honduran Punch blend was personally designed by Llaneza, using Ecuadorian wrapper + Honduran/Nicaraguan/Dominican filler, and positioned as richer and stronger than the Cuban version. It is one of the early representative works of the Honduran cigar industry.

In 1996, Llaneza sold Villazon to General Cigar Company - today, the Honduran version of Punch is made by General Cigar (a subsidiary of Scandinavian Tobacco Group).

The "two Punches" today:

  • Cuban Punch: Produced by Habanos S.A., released worldwide (except the United States), medium strength
  • Honduran Punch: Produced by General Cigar, focused primarily on the U.S. market, stronger

Flavor: British Gentlemanly Taste

Punch has a very clear flavor position - medium-bodied:

  • Strength: Medium
  • Flavor: Woody, nutty, light floral notes, cedar, light coffee, cream, lightly sweet tobacco
  • Positioning: A representative of "British gentlemanly taste"

It is slightly stronger than Hoyo de Monterrey, and milder than Bolívar - a "balanced-school" Cuban cigar positioned between the two. It is especially aligned with the British market's preference for "elegance, balance, and no harshness."

All Cuban versions are "totalmente a mano con tripa larga" (entirely handmade, long filler). All tobacco leaves come from the Vuelta Abajo region. Versions for the British market usually use red cigar bands (other markets use brown), one of the deepest links between British culture and the Cuban cigar industry across 185 years.

  • Punch Triunfos (2025) - A new Petit Corona joining the regular-production series
  • 2013 Serie d'Oro No.2 EL + 2017 Regios de Punch EL - Two global limited editions

Edición Regional Is Punch's Collectible Treasure

Within the Habanos system, Punch is a frequent participant in the Edición Regional series (regional limited editions) - the brand's most important source of rare collectibles. Every year, special-format Punch cigars are made for specific national markets: Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Mexico, and multiple Asian countries have all had Punch RE releases.

For collectors, the real pleasure of pursuing Punch is not the regular-production series, but the RE series - these limited releases are usually distributed only in specific markets, in very small quantities, and are truly rare Cuban cigars.

What the Chinese-Speaking World Should Know About Punch

For cigar enthusiasts in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, several important facts:

  1. Punch Punch is the "standard model for a Cuban Corona Gorda": Its honor as one of Cigar Aficionado's 1992 Cuba's Star Cigars 5 remains relevant today. If you truly want to understand "what a Cuban Corona Gorda should taste like," Punch Punch is required knowledge.

  2. A medium-strength "balanced-school" cigar: Punch sits between Hoyo (elegant) and Bolívar (strong), making it highly suitable as a "transition brand from the elegant school into the stronger school." If you like Hoyo but want the next step with more layers, that is Punch.

  3. Relatively approachable pricing: In Habanos classification, Punch is a "Value brand" - meaning it is not pushed upward in price the way Cohiba/Montecristo are. Punch Punch is usually nearly half the price of Cohiba Robustos at Taiwan duty-free stores and Hong Kong official retail stores, making it a preferred quality everyday cigar.

  4. Excellent aging potential: Although Punch Punch is medium in strength, because of its high standards for quality (inherited from the Cifuentes-Palicio group), it has excellent aging potential - Punch Punch aged for 5-10 years develops a complete range of woody, nutty, and floral layers, and is recognized by collectors as an "elegant-school aging representative."

  5. Edición Regional is a collecting hotspot: If you are a collector, pursue Punch Regional Editions for Asian markets - Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia RE Punch releases are all extremely scarce, and are truly rare Cuban cigars.

  6. Authenticity identification: The image of Mr. Punch is the core brand identifier. Counterfeits often show deviations in the details of Mr. Punch's "sly smile" (especially the curve of the mouth and the gaze). The typeface of Manuel López's name is also a key point for identification.

Why Punch Is the "True British Gentleman's Cigar"

Punch is not a cigar for showing off. It does not have the luxury aura of Cohiba Behike, the mystique of Trinidad Diplomatic, or the forceful impact of Bolívar Belicoso Fino.

It is a true "everyday gentleman's cigar" - elegant, balanced, reliable, and not excessive. A cigar one could have every day without fatigue.

For beginners, Punch Punch is an excellent entry point into the Cuban Corona Gorda format - medium strength, direct flavor, and reasonable price.

For seasoned connoisseurs, Punch Punch is still a Cuba Star Cigars-level cigar, aged versions are a collecting standard, and Edición Regional releases are rare collectibles.

For Cuban-factory-director-level enthusiasts, Punch also has two unique values:

  • It is the cigar industry's most enduring "personal mark" - Manuel López's name has been printed on the cigar band for 141 years, a degree of brand continuity unmatched by others
  • It is a cigar "designed by a German for the British, using Cuban tobacco, and made by Cuban workers" - a true product of global cultural fusion, continuing for 185 years to the present

That clown Mr. Punch from 17th-century British puppet theater is still on the cigar boxes at Havana's La Corona factory today, grinning with a sly smile, reminding us: the best cigars have never been about solemnity, but about making people smile knowingly.
