Montecristo No.4 In Depth: The Global King of the Mareva Vitola, How 42 Ring Gauge and 129mm Became the Eternal Standard for Cuban Cigar Beginners
Written and planned by Cigar Prince Wilson Tsai
If you stand in front of any Casa del Habano anywhere in the world and ask yourself, "Which cigar in this shop sold the most today?" the answer almost needs no guessing -- Montecristo No.4.
Not Cohiba Robustos, not Romeo y Julieta Churchill, and certainly not any limited edition. It is precisely this unassuming small Corona in the Mareva vitola that has continued to dominate the global premium cigar market with high turnover for decades. It appears in leather-chair clubs on St. James Street in London, on cafe terraces by Lake Geneva, on the balcony of The Peninsula Hong Kong, and in the study corner of W Cigar Bar in Taipei's Da'an District late at night.
Montecristo No.4 is the introductory scripture of Cuban cigars, but that sentence is far from enough to describe its full picture. A more accurate way to say it is: it is a cigar that helps beginners find direction and brings veterans back to the origin.

1. Mareva: A Vitola Older Than Montecristo
The factory vitola name of Montecristo No.4 is Mareva. This name is part of the Cuban vitola naming system, and its history is far older than the Montecristo brand.
The Mareva vitola measures 42 ring gauge x 129mm (about 5 1/8 inches), and it is a representative Petit Corona within the Parejos (straight-sided cigars) family. In the Cuban vitola system, the Corona vitola is roughly 42 ring gauge with a length of 140-145mm, while the Mareva is slightly shorter than the standard Corona, forming a more compact and approachable proportion.
Why has Mareva stood out among so many vitolas? The answer lies in its philosophy of "just right":
- Time: 35-45 minutes, the perfect window for conversation after coffee, solitude after a meal, or passing the time before waiting
- Size: unlike a Churchill (178mm), it does not require an entire afternoon, and unlike a Perla, it does not feel too light or understated
- Complexity: 42 ring gauge is enough to contain the complete expression of a three-leaf filler blend, with more power than slender Lanceros and more refinement than thick-ring Robusto
Many top brands under Cuban Habanos have representative works in the Mareva vitola: H. Upmann No.4, Romeo y Julieta No.2, Bolívar Gold Medal, but none can approach Montecristo No.4 in global influence.

2. The Birth in 1935 and the Naming Legend of Alexandre Dumas
The Montecristo brand was founded in 1935 by Alonso Menéndez, an immigrant from Galicia (today part of northwestern Spain). Menéndez also held management rights over the H. Upmann brand and had a profound influence on the Cuban cigar industry.
The brand name comes from Alexandre Dumas' 1844 novel Le Comte de Monte-Cristo -- legend says this was because the Lector (reader) in Havana cigar factories was accustomed to reading this novel aloud while workers rolled cigars, and the workers were deeply drawn into the story, naturally connecting the brand with the tale. The Lector reading tradition at the Partagás factory has already been detailed elsewhere in this site's cigar bible.
After the brand was founded, it debuted with five main specifications:
- No.1 (Cervantes): 42 ring gauge x 165mm
- No.2 (Piramide): 52 ring gauge x 156mm (figurado, tapered head)
- No.3 (Corona): 42 ring gauge x 142mm
- No.4 (Mareva): 42 ring gauge x 129mm
- No.5 (Perla): 40 ring gauge x 102mm
The sequence of these five numbers follows the traditional Cuban naming convention -- the larger the number, the smaller the size. No.4 therefore became the "most everyday" choice in the entire series: not the longest, not the thickest, not the most irregular in shape, just the most exactly right.
After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the state-owned institution that preceded Habanos S.A. took over all cigar factories, and Montecristo became a core brand. With global market expansion in the 1960s-70s, No.4 gradually became the most widely distributed Cuban cigar specification, continuing to this day.

3. The BSM Factory: The Life Source of Montecristo
The main production base of Montecristo No.4 is the Briones Montoto factory (factory code: BSM), located in Havana, commonly known today as the "H. Upmann factory" or "José Martí factory." This factory also produces the full H. Upmann line and is one of the highest-output multi-brand factories under Habanos.
Because global demand for Montecristo almost exceeds the capacity of any single factory, BSM factory director Benito Molina once stated publicly: "No factory has the ability to absorb such enormous Montecristo demand on its own; cross-factory collaboration is inevitable." The La Corona factory (code LCB) also provides capacity support during peak periods.
The tobacco composition of No.4 follows Habanos' Vuelta Abajo purism:
- Wrapper: Vuelta Abajo San Juan y Martínez or San Luis growing areas, color from Colorado Claro to Colorado, with a natural oily sheen
- Binder: middle leaves from Vuelta Abajo, providing structural support and balanced combustion
- Filler: a three-leaf blend -- Ligero (top leaves) provides strength, Seco (middle leaves) provides aroma, and Volado (bottom leaves) maintains burn performance
The design logic of this blend is "balance rather than extremes" -- the proportion of Ligero is deliberately controlled, ensuring the overall strength stays in the Mild-to-Medium range. It has slightly more personality than H. Upmann No.4 produced in the same factory, yet is far from the strength of Partagás Serie D No.4.
4. Smoking Experience: The Three-Part Philosophy of No.4
First Third (A Gentle Opening Greeting)
A freshly lit Montecristo No.4 feels, in its first few draws, almost like a well-trained gentleman's attendant -- modest, courteous, and completely non-aggressive.
Creamy smoke arrives first, carrying a faint Spanish Cedar aroma -- a keynote unique to cigars stored long-term in a humidor. Occasionally, a floral note can be faintly sensed at the back of the nasal cavity, like dried jasmine or the withered edges of a white rose.
During the retrohale, the first third of No.4 is at its freshest: light woodiness with a trace of sweetness, without any bitterness, making it hard not to take another draw.
Middle Third (The Gradual Emergence of Character)
Entering the second third, No.4 begins to reveal its true character. The creaminess gives way to a deeper earthiness and leather tone, and versions from certain years may also bring out a faint bittersweet dark chocolate note.
The strength quietly rises from Mild to Mild-to-Medium, and the appearance of that threshold is almost never abrupt, like music gradually moving from a soft passage into the main theme. This section is the most interesting stage for smoking appreciation of No.4, and it is also the most worth carefully experiencing through the nasal cavity -- through the retrohale, you will capture more floral and fruity layers than in the mouth.
A No.4 aged for 12-24 months will show clear evolution in the middle third: more fruit aromas (apricot, dried plum) merge into the earthy background, the whole becoming rounder and the edges softer.
Final Third (Calm Closing Wisdom)
The final third of No.4 is the part connoisseurs most look forward to, and also the reason it makes people reluctant to put it down.
The strength rises slightly again, but not aggressively: the leather tone becomes more obvious, and an occasional mint-like coolness leaves a faint mark at the end of the nasal cavity. If the smoking rhythm is maintained at one draw every 60-90 seconds, the burn line at this stage usually remains tidy, and the white ash stays firm without falling.
In the final 1-2 centimeters, No.4 becomes slightly more concentrated -- if you continue here, you will receive the final summary of strength; if you choose to set it down, what you preserve is the most elegant memory of the entire cigar. The gentleman's choice is usually the latter.

5. Comparing No.4 With Its Sibling Specifications
Among Montecristo's main specifications:
| Specification | Vitola | Ring Gauge x Length | Strength Positioning | Smoking Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No.4 | Mareva | 42 x 129mm | Mild-Medium | 35-45 minutes |
| No.3 | Corona | 42 x 142mm | Medium | 45-55 minutes |
| No.2 | Piramide | 52 x 156mm | Medium-Full | 60-75 minutes |
No.4 is the "most everyday" presence among the three, No.3 is the transitional middle point, and No.2 (already discussed in depth in another article) is a completely different level of ritual. All three are worth collecting, but No.4 is the one you will never regret opening a box of at any time.

6. Pairing Suggestions
Coffee: medium-dark roast Espresso or Flat White -- the creamy milk foam forms a mirrored resonance with the creamy opening of No.4, making it the most effortless perfect pairing.
Whisky: Speyside 12-15 years (Glenfiddich 12, Balvenie DoubleWood) -- fruit tones and woody tones complement rather than compete.
Cognac: Cognac VSOP level (rather than XO) -- the light nature of No.4 is better suited to young cognac rich in fruit aroma, rather than the heavy oakiness of XO.
Palate-cleansing suggestion: after every 3-5 draws, sip a small amount of S.Pellegrino or Volvic mineral water to clear oral residue and return every draw to a clear state.

7. Collection and Storage Points
Montecristo No.4 is a regular-production Habanos item, but "regular" does not mean "there is no need to care about year and storage":
Post-factory resting: for No.4 within 3 months of leaving the factory, it is recommended to rest it in a humidor for at least 1-2 months to allow "ship shock" (slight compression of the tobacco caused by sea transport) to settle.
Best smoking appreciation window: 6-18 months after leaving the factory is the best smoking appreciation period recognized by most gentlemen's club members.
Long-term aging: if aged for more than 3 years, please maintain 65-68% relative humidity and 16-18°C. No.4 aged for more than 5 years will become rounder, but the freshness of the floral aroma may disappear -- the trade-off depends on personal preference.
Anti-counterfeit attention: the proportion of counterfeit Montecristo No.4 on the market is not low, especially through unauthorized channels in Asia. Confirm the Habanos Garantía holographic security sticker and the factory code on the bottom of the box (usually BSM or LCB). The four major regular channels are the only guarantee of authenticity.
Conclusion: An Introduction That Never Goes Out of Date
The cigar world has no shortage of "introductory choices," but introductory choices that also make veterans willingly return again and again are extremely rare. Montecristo No.4 is the greatest exception among them.
It is not the most complex Cuban cigar, nor is it the most astonishing. But on an ordinary Friday afternoon, with wind outside the window and a cup of medium-dark roast coffee at hand, requiring no special reason and no special occasion -- the calm and pleasure brought by that Montecristo No.4 is an everyday luxury that no limited edition can easily replicate.
From 1935 to the present, it has been so, and it will continue to be so.
