Why do cigars need to be stored properly?

Cigars are made of whole-leaf natural tobacco -- they are not industrial products, and they change with the environment:

• Too dry: the tobacco leaves become brittle and crack, burn too quickly, and develop bitterness
• Too humid: mold, cigar beetle eggs may hatch, and the draw becomes blocked

No-cost "short-term" emergency solutions

If you temporarily do not have the budget to buy Boveda + Ziploc:

Emergency solution A: Cedar wood + cookie tin

1. Find a sealed metal or plastic cookie tin
2. Line it with a piece of unvarnished Spanish cedar board (cheap online)
3. Place the cigars on top
4. Add 2-3 drops of distilled water (do not use tap water) to the edge of the cedar board
5. Close tightly and keep away from light

Storage period: 1-2 weeks, for emergency use.

Emergency solution B: Damp sponge (cheapest)

1. Find a sealed plastic box
2. Take a clean sponge, moisten it with distilled water and wring it until slightly damp (it must not drip)
3. Wrap the sponge with gauze and place it in a corner of the box (must not directly touch the cigars)
4. Place the cigars on the other side

Storage period: 3-7 days, for very short-term emergency use.

Warning: Sponge humidity is unstable and may cause mold. Only for short-term emergency use; not recommended for long-term use.

Taboo 1: Putting cigars in the refrigerator

The refrigerator has humidity that is too low (30-40%) + contamination from food odors -> cigars become dry and absorb strange smells.

Taboo 3: Putting cigars in a sealed box together with food

How do you tell if a cigar has gone bad?

Still smokeable

• Slightly dry but still elastic -> can recover after humidification
• Wrapper slightly wrinkled -> insufficient humidity, can recover
• Has a faint cedar aroma -> normal

Do not smoke it

• Mold (white fluff, blue-green spots) -> discard the entire cigar and inspect the whole box
• Beetle holes (small round holes on the cigar surface) -> discard the entire cigar and freeze-treat the whole box
• Sour smell, musty smell, rancid oil smell -> discard directly
