Francisco Donatién Factory: Brick Walls from 1868, a Cigar Dream from 1961
The story of Vegueros begins with a brick building constructed in 1868. It is located in the capital of Pinar del Río Province, and it was not originally a cigar factory.
In 1961, the third year after the Cuban Revolution, the Francisco Donatién factory (named after a revolutionary hero) began production in this building, making cigars for domestic Cuban consumption. After the revolution, the Cuban tobacco industry underwent large-scale restructuring. Cubatabaco took unified control of all private tobacco factories, while also establishing a production system for the domestic market.
The cigars produced by the Francisco Donatién factory were initially used for state banquets and official occasions. Because these cigars were prepared for celebrations for tobacco farmers and agricultural workers, locals passed down the nickname "Vegueros" by word of mouth. In the life of the Vegueros brand, there is an important turning point: in 2012, the original Vegueros vitolas were discontinued across the line, including the once popular Especiales No.1 and No.2.
In 2013, Habanos relaunched Vegueros with a completely new brand visual identity and a completely new vitola lineup. The most significant change was the packaging format: the new Vegueros adopted 16-count metal tins, moving away from the traditional wooden box and bringing a rugged, local, practical new aesthetic.
