The Historical Decision of 1989: The Second Expansion of the Línea Clásica

Cohiba originated in 1966 at the El Laguito estate (factory code EL) in the suburbs of Havana. It was a French colonial mansion built by British-descended industrialist Alberto Casimiro Fowler Jiménez during the period of sugar-industry windfall profits after World War I. It was later taken over by the Cuban government and transformed into a top-tier cigar training factory.

The original Cohiba consisted of only three vitolas: Lanceros (Laguito No.1, 38 × 192mm), Coronas Especiales (Laguito No.2, 38 × 152mm), and Panetelas (Laguito No.3, 26 × 115mm). All were slim-ring, long-bodied diplomatic-gift formats, a language designed for heads of state and honored guests.

In 1982, Cohiba began being released to the public, though still in extremely limited quantities. It was not until 1989 that Habanos decided to significantly expand the Línea Clásica, adding three new vitolas: Esplendidos (Churchill format, 47 × 178mm), Exquisitos (Panetela Larga, 36 × 156mm), and Robustos (Zino size, 50 × 124mm).

The addition of Robustos officially declared that Cohiba was embracing the era of the "50 ring gauge revolution." In the late 1980s, the preferences of cigar enthusiasts worldwide were shifting toward larger ring gauges and shorter smoking times. The Robusto format had already begun to gain popularity in non-Cuban circles, and Habanos needed to respond. The birth of Cohiba Robustos was El Laguito's formal declaration regarding this market trend.

Specification Philosophy: The Combustion Mathematics of 50 × 124mm

In the standard Habanos vitola system, Robustos corresponds to the vitola name Zino (50 × 124mm / 4 7/8 inches). The mathematics of this format are highly precise:

• 50 ring gauge: Sufficient to contain a full volume of filler, giving the top-grade tobacco leaves that have undergone three-stage Pilón fermentation room to present themselves, while not diluting concentration as a 52-54 ring gauge might
• 124mm length: Approximately 45 minutes of burning time, the most complete "afternoon appreciation window"; enough to move through three full stages of flavor evolution without dragging on to the point of fatigue
• Three-part structure: The first third opens with cedar and fresh pepper; the middle turns toward cacao bean, nuts, and cream; the final third presents leather and dark-roasted coffee, with Cohiba's distinctive sweet-spicy finish at its most concentrated here

Compared with the same brand's Siglo VI (52 × 150mm, 90 minutes), Robustos has higher density and stronger flavor concentration per minute. The filler ratio used by El Laguito for this vitola gives the bunch a slightly higher density than the Línea 1492 series. This is one of the technical reasons many experienced appreciators believe Robustos "better displays Cohiba's core character" than the Siglo series.

Craftsmanship Characteristics of the El Laguito Factory

El Laguito (factory code EL) is the only factory in the Habanos system that produces only Cohiba. The entire factory's tobacco selection standards are higher than those of other factories. Before wrapper leaves enter the factory, they must rest for at least another two years (compared with an aging cycle usually around one year at other Cuban factories), bringing wrapper silkiness and combustibility to a higher level.

Robustos is rolled using the Entubado method: each filler leaf is individually rolled into a hollow tube shape, then combined into a bunch, allowing the air channel to ventilate evenly and avoiding the localized uneven resistance that can occur with the Bunch & Book method. In a 50 ring gauge format, even a slight deviation in rolling is immediately perceptible in the draw, making the craftsmanship requirements of Entubado even stricter.

The three-leaf structure of all Cohiba cigars (wrapper, binder, and filler) comes from the core Vuelta Abajo growing region, particularly concentrated in the municipalities of San Juan y Martínez and San Luis. After passing through the five quality-grade classifications of Habanos, only the highest grade flows to El Laguito.

Flavor Deconstruction: The Three-Stage Code of Robustos

When appreciating Cohiba Robustos, the following three stages form the main flavor axis:

First third (front 1/3, approximately 0-15 minutes): After lighting, give it 5 minutes to warm up. The opening profile is fresh cedar and white pepper, a typical beginning for high-grade Vuelta Abajo wrapper. Some batches may show a slight grassy note, which is normal and naturally fades as combustion progresses. The overall strength in this section is medium, suitable for appreciators of all levels.

Middle third (second 2/3, approximately 15-35 minutes): The most exciting chapter of Robustos. The flavor turns toward cacao bean, roasted hazelnut, and espresso, accompanied by a creamy smoke texture. In batches aged for more than 5 years, the creamy layers in this section thicken noticeably; the peppery spiciness recedes, replaced by a rounder sweet-spicy combination. Strength enters the medium-full range.

Final third (back 1/3, approximately 35-45 minutes): Leather, dark wood, and a long coffee undertone in the finish. The three-stage Pilón fermentation of El Laguito tobacco shows its core character in the final third: a finish with a touch of sweet spice, clearly distinct from the drier, spicier finish more typical of the Partagás factory.

Selection and Aging Recommendations

Cohiba Robustos uses a 25-count wooden box (SBN) as its standard format. There is also a 3-count Tubos aluminum tube version, which is convenient for travel but does not age as effectively as the non-tubed format.

Aging recommendation: Fresh batches (within 1 year of leaving the factory) of Robustos tend to have a stronger pepper note, so aging for at least 18 months before opening is recommended. Batches aged for more than 5 years are the standard configuration for collectors; creamy layers, sweet-spicy balance, and middle-section complexity all improve noticeably. Recommended temperature is 16-18°C, with humidity at 65-68% (El Laguito wrappers have higher firmness and do not need to be kept above 70%).

Box Code identification: All Cohiba cigars are produced at El Laguito (code EL), and the Box Code can confirm the batch year. When making a selection, pay attention to identifying the Code and confirming that it is not an outsourced batch; this is the main basis for determining the starting point of aging.
