Origins: The Trinity of the El Laguito Factory (1966-1982)

The El Laguito factory (factory code: EL) is located in the western suburbs of Havana. In 1966, it began as an elite workshop training top female cigar rollers, and the Cohiba brand was born there. The original Cohiba consisted of only three vitolas:

• Laguito No.1 (later Lanceros): 7⅝ inches × 38 ring
• Laguito No.2 (later Coronas Especiales): 6 inches × 38 ring
• Laguito No.3 (later Panetelas): 4⅝ inches × 26 ring

These three were established in 1969, forming Cohiba's original lineage. Castro used Laguito No.2 as a top-level diplomatic gift, presenting it to foreign heads of state, distinguished guests visiting Havana, and senior Cuban representatives overseas. At the time, there was no trademark and no pricing - it was simply the smoky language of Cuban state power.

In 1982, Habanos (then still Cubatabaco) officially commercialized Cohiba, and Coronas Especiales entered the market, taking its formal place in the Línea Clásica.

The Geometric Aesthetics of Laguito No.2: The Limits of 38 Ring Gauge

In Cuban specification charts, 38 ring gauge belongs to the world of slim cigars (Panetela and Lanceros). The figures for Coronas Especiales are as follows:

A 38 ring gauge means the cross-section of the filler tobacco is extremely small, so the cigar maker must precisely control the density of the entubado - too loose and it burns too fast and hot; too tight and the draw becomes unbearable. This is exactly the essence of the traditional craft of El Laguito's female torcedoras: the details lie within millimeters.

The pigtail cap is another mark of craftsmanship. This small braid is not merely decorative - it is recommended to use a straight cut at the base of the pigtail to leave a clean opening. With a V-cut, the slim ring gauge can crack easily; a punch cut is almost impractical on a 38 ring gauge.

The Six Seats of Línea Clásica: The Secret of Triple Fermentation

In 1989, Cohiba added Robusto, Exquisito, and Esplendidos, which together with the original three became known as the Línea Clásica (six seats). These six share one core craft distinction:

Triple Fermentation

Ordinary Cuban cigar tobacco undergoes two fermentations (Pilón pile fermentation). On top of this, Cohiba's Línea Clásica places selected filler and binder in cedar barrels for a third low-temperature fermentation lasting several months. The result is that impurities volatilize further, nicotine strength decreases, and the aroma becomes more delicate and rounded.

Among the six, Coronas Especiales is the slimmest member with the highest length ratio. The long, slim format keeps the combustion temperature lower, allowing the creaminess and sweetness brought by the third fermentation to stand out especially clearly under low-temperature combustion. By comparison, Lanceros requires nearly 90 minutes, while Coronas Especiales needs only about 50 minutes. Yet the essence of tobacco at a similar density is concentrated into a shorter span of time and space, forming another kind of intensity.

Tasting Notes: A Three-Stage Evolution

First third (lighting to 1/3)

Dry wood forms the base, opening with slight spices - similar to lightly ground black pepper - accompanied by earthy notes. A little bitterness right after lighting is normal (the slim ring gauge concentrates combustion heat), and it gradually opens up after the first centimeter has burned. If the ash is white and fine, it is an indicator of good filling.

Middle third (1/3 to 2/3)

The results of the third fermentation begin to emerge: cream, coffee, cocoa, and sometimes a faint honeyed sweetness. This is the most charming period of Coronas Especiales, and also where it differs most from cigars of the same format from other brands.

Final third (last 1/3)

The sweetness continues, but the strength rises slightly; cedar notes deepen, with occasional caramel on the finish. The slim ring gauge makes the temperature rise more quickly in the final section - if it feels noticeably hot, pause briefly and let the cigar cool for 30 seconds before continuing.

Best appreciation occasions: Suitable for occasions that call for refinement but have limited time (45-60 minutes) - a glass of Cognac after a business dinner, or a quiet moment before receiving guests in the evening. It does not require you to set aside an entire afternoon.

Pairing suggestions:

• Light aged Cognac (Hennessy XO or Courvoisier VSOP) - the sense of richness echoes beautifully
• Jamaican Blue Mountain black coffee - bitterness and sweetness reflect each other, drawing out the cocoa notes in the middle third
• Champagne Blanc de Blancs (Krug or Salon) - fine bubbles create an interesting dialogue with the creaminess of the Panetela

Lighting suggestions: Use a cedar spill or butane torch lighter to gently warm the foot at low temperature, evenly lighting the slim cross-section. Do not rush the light - with a 38 ring gauge, thirty seconds of patient lighting is better than later correcting an uneven burn.
