When Cuban Habanos leave the factory, the cigars are placed directly into Spanish cedar boxes without cellophane wrapping.

Reasons:

• Habanos believes cellophane can "hinder the aging effect of the wooden box"
• Cuban cigars already undergo 18 months of mandatory aging before release, so extra protection is not needed
• Aroma exchange among cigars inside the wooden box is part of Cuban culture

Exception: a small number of Cohiba flagship editions (some Behike versions) use cellophane.

Non-Cuban cigars: 90% use cellophane

Cigars from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Honduras almost all come with cellophane.

Reasons:

• Non-Cuban factories ship over long distances to global retailers and need protection
• Cellophane protects the wrapper leaf from scratches and prevents cigar bands from discoloring
• Cigars are usually not fully aged at the time of shipping, and cellophane can slow down flavor loss

Representative brands: Davidoff, Padrón, Arturo Fuente, Macanudo, Liga Privada - all use cellophane.

The 3 protective functions of cellophane

Function 1: Physical protection

It prevents friction between cigars, scratches on the wrapper leaf, and cigar band displacement.

• A scratch on the cellophane = no problem
• A scratch on the wrapper leaf = the cigar cannot be smoked properly

Function 2: Odor isolation (short term)

Cellophane can buffer contamination from external odors in the short term (1-12 months).

Function 3: Humidity buffering

Cellophane is a semi-permeable material - it allows humidity exchange between the cigar and the outside environment, but at a slower speed.

When a beginner does not control humidor humidity well, cellophane can give you an extra 2-3 weeks of response time.

Should you remove it or keep it? 4 situations

Situation 1: Short-term smoking (will finish within 3 months)

Keep it on.

• Cellophane can prevent scratches on the wrapper leaf
• There is no time to enter the "aging" stage
• Removing it offers no benefit

Situation 2: Medium-term storage (6 months-2 years)

Keep it on, but inspect regularly.

• Cellophane will slowly "yellow" - this is natural oil from the wrapper leaf seeping out, and is normal
• Open the cellophane every 6 months and smell it to confirm there is no moldy odor

⚠️ Cellophane completely yellowed + visible mold inside: that is mold contamination. Discard it.

Situation 3: Long-term aging (3-5 years or more)

Remove it, and let the cigars directly contact the cedar box.

• Cellophane will block aroma exchange between the cigar and cedar wood + other cigars
• The essence of aging is "mutual nourishment among cigars"
• Cellophane effectively "isolates" the cigar, reducing the aging effect by 30-50%

Experienced smokers will remove the cellophane 6 months after purchase and place the cigars into a dedicated aging box.

Situation 4: Ultra-long-term collection (10+ years, investment-grade)

Absolutely remove it.

Ten-year-level cigar aging requires full contact with the wooden box. On this timeline, cellophane will already begin to "decompose" (becoming hard, brittle, and sticking to the cigar).

How should cigars be stored after removing the cellophane?

Method A: Place them in the cedar drawer of a humidor

The most common and simplest method. The cigars directly contact the cedar boards and absorb woody aromas.

Method B: Put them back into the original box / original packaging (without cellophane)

If the original box has enough space, put the cigars back into the original box after removing the cellophane - they will age together with the other cigars in the same box.

Method C: Dedicated aging cabinet (VIP cigar cabinet level)

Collectors prepare independent aging cabinets and classify storage by brand / production region / year.

Myth 1: "Cellophane is not breathable and will ruin cigars"

Wrong. Cellophane is semi-permeable (cellulose-based) - humidity can exchange slowly.

Myth 2: "Yellowed cellophane means the cigar has gone bad"

Wrong. Yellowing cellophane is caused by wrapper oils seeping through, and this indicates good cigar quality and abundant oils.

As long as there are no mold spots or moldy odors, yellowing is a good thing.

Myth 3: "Cuban cigars must never have cellophane added"

Wrong. The Cohiba Behike Cab version has cellophane - this is Habanos' own decision.

Myth 4: "The more transparent the cellophane, the fresher it is"

Partly correct. Completely transparent = no aging, and the oils have not seeped through.

But "fresh = tastes good" is not correct - many cigars need more than 6 months of aging before reaching the right state.

Myth 5: "Cigars cannot age if the cellophane is not removed"

Wrong. If the cellophane is not removed, the aging effect is lower, but it is not "impossible."
