Vegueros is a post-Revolution brand — in 1961, the Francisco Donatién factory in Pinar del Río province began producing cigars for the domestic market. These cigars were made for state banquets and public events, and because visitors touring the tobacco fields of Pinar del Río wanted to taste the cigars rolled by local tobacco farmers themselves, they gradually came to be called "Vegueros".
"Veguero" is Spanish for "tobacco farmer" — referring to the generations of farmers who grow tobacco in Pinar del Río province. The brand name is a tribute to these tobacco farmers, who are the cornerstone of the entire Cuban cigar industry.
In 1996, Habanos S.A. officially registered Vegueros as an international brand, as a tribute to the tobacco farmers of Pinar del Río. At that time, 4 slim vitolas were launched for the international market: Especiales No.1 (Laguito No.1), Especiales No.2 (Laguito No.2), Mareva, Seoane — basically all "affordable versions of Cohiba specifications".
Vegueros was fully relaunched in 2013. This was one of the most thorough brand overhauls in the Cuban cigar industry. New image, new sizes, new packaging (metal tin of 16, a first in the cigar industry), and new flavor positioning (medium to full strength). All new size names come from tobacco farmers' dialect: Mañanitas, Tapados, Entretiempos.
Vegueros is the only Cuban cigar brand to use metal tin of 16 as its main packaging format. All other Cuban brands use traditional wooden boxes. This modern packaging gives Vegueros strong visual recognition on cigar-shop shelves.
All Cuban versions of Vegueros are 'totalmente a mano con tripa larga' (fully handmade, long filler), which is very rare in this price range. The wrapper, binder, and filler tobaccos all come from Vuelta Abajo (Pinar del Río).
Vegueros Mañanitas (4" × 46, vitola: Petit Pirámides) - 'Mañanitas' means 'mornings' in Spanish and is one of the brand's first cigars of the new era. A 20-25 minute experience, a cigar suited for morning coffee. Flavors: earth, cocoa, light spice.
Vegueros Entretiempos (4⅜ × 52, vitola: Petit Edmundo) - 'Entretiempos' is tobacco-farmer dialect referring to the 'transitional season' (between planting and harvesting). Its specifications are exactly the same as Montecristo Petit Edmundo, and it is the thickest regular-production Vegueros. A 40 minute experience, with flavors of herbs, hay, earth, and nuts.
Vegueros is one of the few brands in the cigar industry that is officially classified as a 'Havana brand' but actually produced in Pinar del Río. All other major Habanos brands are rolled in Havana. Vegueros still maintains 'totalmente a mano' fully handmade production at the Francisco Donatién factory in Pinar del Río.
Vegueros flavor positioning: medium to full strength. It is stronger and more direct than the average 'affordable Cuban cigar'. Flavor notes: herbs, hay, earth, nuts, wood, dark chocolate, light spice, orange peel, and a creamy finish. It reflects the real flavor preferences of local tobacco farmers in Pinar del Río: strong but unpolished.
In the 'Cuban handmade long-filler under €5/stick' segment, Vegueros is the king of value for money. It is more refined than Quintero short filler and much cheaper than Cohiba/Montecristo. It is the first choice for players who want a long-filler Cuban experience but have a limited budget.
Vegueros packaging feature: black metal tins with gold-foil accents, containing 16 cigars (not the traditional 25 or 50). This modern packaging format gives Vegueros a strong modern visual identity in the 21st-century cigar market.
In the Vuelta Abajo region, tobacco farmers rolling cigars for their own smoking is a long-standing tradition. Farmers were allowed to keep a small amount of their own tobacco leaves for personal enjoyment and roll them into 'country cigars'. The Vegueros brand was created to commercialize and internationalize this tradition.
Vegueros' 'tribute to tobacco farmers' philosophy is unique in the cigar industry. All other Cuban brands are named after founders, businessmen, writers, or royal figures (Cohiba = tribal chief, Montecristo = writer's novel, H. Upmann = banker, Bolívar = general). Vegueros is the only brand named after 'anonymous tobacco farmers'.
The history of the Francisco Donatién factory is very unusual: the building was constructed in 1868 and was first a hospital, later became a prison, and is said to have briefly served as an art school. In 1961, it was converted into a cigar factory and remains so today. Today, in addition to Vegueros, Trinidad cigars are also produced at this factory.
All 4 original Vegueros models were discontinued in 2010-2013: Mareva (2012), Seoane (2012), Especiales No.1 (2010), and Especiales No.2 (2010). This marked the brand's entry into a stage of complete repositioning.
Vegueros Tapados (4¾ × 46, vitola: Mareva Gruesa, Robusto Extra) - 'Tapados' is tobacco-farmer dialect referring to 'shade-grown tobacco leaves'. The factory name 'Mareva Gruesa' literally translates as 'fat Mareva'. It is a thicker version of Habanos' most commonly used Corona size. A 35-40 minute experience, with flavors of pure toasted tobacco leaf, wood, and dark chocolate.
Vegueros Centrofinos (5⅛ × 50, vitola: Robusto Extra) - a new size launched in 2018. This Robusto-Extra shape is an exclusive specification not used by any other Cuban cigar brand. A nearly 1 hour experience, with flavors of herbs, earth, nuts, wood, and orange peel.
2003 Caracol SA privately commissioned Vegueros 135th Aniversario Humidor - commemorating the 135th anniversary of the founding of Pinar del Río city (known as the 'Capital of Cuban Tobacco'). 135 numbered humidors, each with handwritten signatures from 5 major tobacco growers. Each humidor contains 135 special-specification cigars, internally called 'Vegueron' (large Vegueros), a unique size made by cutting down the Prominentes format.
An interesting cigar-industry statistic: a veguero on average has to 'handle' each tobacco plant 150 times, from seed, seedling, planting, fertilizing, trimming, harvesting, drying, and fermentation to the completion of the final leaf. Each tobacco leaf makes a distinctive 'crack' sound when picked from the stalk.
The 135th anniversary Humidor commissioned by Caracol SA was originally intended to contain Belicosos Extra, but at the last moment it was changed to cut-down Prominentes (that is, Vegueron). This also created a rare 2002 product, the Vegueros Especiales No.2 numbered humidor (200 numbered pieces) - a truly rare item in collectors' eyes.
Pinar del Río tobacco season: sowing in 10-11月 and harvesting in 3月. During that period, endless tobacco fields can be seen across Vuelta Abajo. This natural rhythm is at the core of the Vegueros brand spirit.
Vegueros Centrogordos (launched in 2022 and released in late 2023) - the brand's newest size, reflecting Vegueros' continued innovation and expansion of its product line.
Within the Habanos system, Vegueros is in the 'Other' category (the same category as La Gloria Cubana), meaning it sits 'between the Global main brands and the Volume brands'. Its price positioning is 'much cheaper than Cohiba/Montecristo, but more expensive than Quintero/Jose L. Piedra'.
Vegueros has never released an Edición Limitada or Edición Regional--except for the privately commissioned 135th anniversary humidor in 2003. This "no limited editions" trait positions the entire Vegueros brand as an "everyday cigar".
Although Vegueros is positioned as a "budget Cuban", it has repeatedly scored 88-91 points in Cigar Aficionado blind tastings--one of the few Cuban cigars under €5 per stick that can score 90 points.
Today, the Francisco Donatién factory in downtown Pinar del Río is a popular cigar-tourism attraction--visitors can observe the rolling process of Vegueros and Trinidad, making it one of the few cigar factories open to the public.
All four original 1996 Vegueros used the same vitolas as Cohiba (Laguito No.1/2, Mareva, Seoane)--the idea was a "budget version of Cohiba specs". But this strategy was abandoned in 2013, and the new-generation Vegueros adopted completely new, distinctive sizes.
The Vegueros brand pays special tribute to one of Cuba's most famous tobacco farmers, Pancho Cuba. He is a legendary figure in the cigar industry and a symbol of the tobacco-farming spirit of Pinar del Río.
Strictly speaking, the original Vegueros Especiales No.1 was "an enhanced Cohiba with only double fermentation"--using the Laguito No.1 format (192mm × 38) but only two fermentations (Cohiba uses three). This is the brand's most direct historical link to Cohiba craftsmanship.

The Cigar of the Tobacco Farmer
If Cohiba is the cigar of revolution, Trinidad is the cigar of secrecy, and Montecristo is the cigar of literature, Vegueros the tobacco farmer is the cigar truly dedicated to the "unsung heroes" - a brand named after generations of tobacco farmers, produced locally in Pinar del Río, packaged in 16-count metal tins, and built around a fully modern direction. Its story proves that the most important people in the cigar industry have never been the merchants or generals of Havana, but the farmers who bend over in the fields every day.
The story begins in Pinar del Río in 1961. After the revolution, the Francisco Donatién factory in Pinar del Río province began producing cigars for the domestic market (previously, it mainly produced cigarettes). These cigars were made for state banquets and public events. Because visitors touring the tobacco fields of Pinar del Río wanted to appreciate the cigars rolled by local tobacco farmers themselves, they gradually became known as "Vegueros".
But Vegueros would not truly become an international brand until 1996, when Habanos S.A. officially registered Vegueros as an international brand as a tribute to the tobacco farmers of Pinar del Río.
Veguero: Spanish for Tobacco Farmer
"Veguero" is Spanish for "tobacco farmer" - referring to the generations of farmers who cultivate tobacco in Pinar del Río province.
This naming choice is unique in the cigar industry. Look at the names of other Cuban brands:
- Cohiba: the Taíno tribal term for tobacco leaf
- Montecristo: Dumas' novel The Count of Monte Cristo
- Romeo y Julieta: Shakespeare's tragedy
- H. Upmann: a German banker
- Bolívar: the South American independence hero and general
- Hoyo de Monterrey: the name of a tobacco farm
Vegueros is the only brand named after the "unknown tobacco farmer" - a tribute to those who bend over in the fields every day and have been forgotten by history.
1996 Origins: An Affordable Version of Cohiba Formats
At the time, Habanos S.A. launched 4 slender vitolas into the international market:
- Especiales No.1 (Laguito No.1 format 192mm × 38)
- Especiales No.2 (Laguito No.2 format)
- Mareva
- Seoane
These formats were all identical to Cohiba - the concept was an "affordable version of Cohiba formats". Strictly speaking, Especiales No.1 was an "enhanced Cohiba with only double fermentation" - using the Laguito No.1 format but with only two fermentations (Cohiba uses three). This is the brand's most direct historical connection to Cohiba craftsmanship.
But this "affordable Cohiba" strategy was later abandoned.
Francisco Donatién Factory: From Hospital to Prison to Cigar Factory
Vegueros is one of the few cigar brands officially classified as a "Havana brand" but actually produced in Pinar del Río - all other major Habanos brands are rolled in Havana.
The factory has a very distinctive history: the building was constructed in 1868. It was first a hospital and later became a prison, and it is said to have briefly served as an art school. In 1961, it was converted into a cigar factory, and it remains so today. Today, besides Vegueros, Trinidad cigars are also produced in this factory - so Vegueros and Trinidad are "brothers from the same factory".
The factory is located in a majestic building in downtown Pinar del Río. Today, it is a popular destination for cigar tourism - visitors can observe the rolling process of Vegueros and Trinidad, making it one of the few factories in the cigar industry open to the public.
A Veguero Handles Tobacco 150 Times
The spirit of the Vegueros brand is respect for the labor of tobacco farmers. One interesting statistic in the cigar industry:
A veguero, on average, "handles" each tobacco plant 150 times - from seed, seedling, planting, fertilizing, pruning, harvesting, drying, and fermentation, all the way until the final leaf is complete. Each tobacco leaf makes a distinctive "click" sound when it is plucked from the stalk.
The tobacco season in Pinar del Río: sowing in October-November and harvesting in March - during that period, one can see endless tobacco fields across Vuelta Abajo. This natural rhythm is at the core of the Vegueros brand spirit.
In the Vuelta Abajo region, it is a long-standing tradition for tobacco farmers to roll cigars for their own use - farmers are allowed to keep a small amount of their own tobacco leaves for personal enjoyment, rolling them into "country cigars". The Vegueros brand sought to commercialize and internationalize this tradition.
The brand especially pays tribute to one of Cuba's best-known tobacco farmers, Pancho Cuba - a legendary figure in the cigar industry and a symbol of the tobacco-farming spirit of Pinar del Río.
The Rare 2003 Humidor
In 2003, Caracol SA privately commissioned the Vegueros 135th Aniversario Humidor - commemorating the 135th anniversary of the founding of the city of Pinar del Río (known as the "Capital of Cuban Tobacco").
There were 135 numbered humidors, each accompanied by the handwritten signatures of 5 major tobacco growers. Each humidor contained 135 cigars in a special format, internally called "Vegueron" (large Vegueros), a unique size made by cutting down the Prominentes format.
The humidor commissioned by Caracol SA was originally intended to contain Belicosos Extra, but at the last moment it was changed to shortened Prominentes (that is, Vegueron). This also created a rare 2002 product, the Vegueros Especiales No.2 numbered humidor (200 numbered pieces) - a true rarity in the eyes of collectors.
2013: A Complete Relaunch
From 2010 to 2013, all 4 original Vegueros lines were discontinued: Mareva (2012), Seoane (2012), Especiales No.1 (2010), and Especiales No.2 (2010). This marked the brand's entry into a stage of "complete repositioning".
In 2013, Vegueros was fully relaunched - one of the most thorough brand reinventions in the Cuban cigar industry:
- New image: metallic cigar bands and modern design
- New sizes: Mañanitas, Tapados, Entretiempos - all names derived from tobacco-farmer dialect
- New packaging: 16-count metal tins, a first in the cigar industry
- New flavor positioning: medium to full strength
Vegueros became the only Cuban cigar brand whose primary packaging format is a metal tin of 16 - all other Cuban brands use traditional wooden boxes. This modern packaging gives Vegueros a strong visual identity on cigar shop shelves.
Flavor: The Real Flavor Preference of Tobacco Farmers
Vegueros flavor positioning: medium to full strength - stronger and more direct than the usual "affordable Cuban cigar":
- Strength: medium to full
- Flavor: herbs, hay, earth, nuts, wood, dark chocolate, light spice, orange peel, creamy finish
- Positioning: "reflecting the real flavor preferences of local tobacco farmers in Pinar del Río" - strong and unvarnished
This is similar to the "raw tobacco" directness of Quintero but more refined, and it is the complete opposite of the creamy coffee roundness of Cohiba. Vegueros is a cigar for people who have truly experienced tobacco leaves from the fields.
Most importantly: all Cuban-version Vegueros are "totalmente a mano con tripa larga" (totally handmade, long-filler) - a very rare quality in this price segment. The wrapper, binder, and filler tobacco all come from Vuelta Abajo (Pinar del Río).
Flagship Products: 5 You Should Know (Tobacco-Farmer Dialect Edition)
Vegueros Mañanitas (4" × 46, vitola: Petit Pirámides) - "Mañanitas" means "mornings" in Spanish, and it was one of the first cigars of the brand's new era. A 20-25 minute experience, a perfect cigar with coffee in the morning. Flavors: earth, cocoa, light spice.
Vegueros Tapados (4¾ × 46, vitola: Mareva Gruesa, Robusto Extra) - "Tapados" is tobacco-farmer dialect, referring to "shade-grown tobacco leaves". The factory name "Mareva Gruesa" literally means "fat Mareva" - a fatter version of the Corona size most commonly used by Habanos. A 35-40 minute experience, with flavors of pure roasted tobacco leaf, wood, and dark chocolate.
Vegueros Entretiempos (4⅜ × 52, vitola: Petit Edmundo) - "Entretiempos" is tobacco-farmer dialect, referring to the "transitional season" (between planting and harvest). Its format is exactly the same as the Montecristo Petit Edmundo, and it is the thickest regular-production Vegueros. A 40 minute experience, with flavors of herbs, hay, earth, and nuts.
Vegueros Centrofinos (5⅛ × 50, vitola: Robusto Extra) - a new size released in 2018. This Robusto-Extra shape is an exclusive format not used by any other Cuban cigar brand. Nearly a 1 hour experience, with flavors of herbs, earth, nuts, wood, and orange peel.
Vegueros Centrogordos (launched in 2022 and released at the end of 2023) - the brand's newest size, reflecting Vegueros' continued innovation and expansion of its product line.
Vegueros has never released an Edición Limitada or Edición Regional - apart from that privately commissioned 135th anniversary humidor in 2003. This "no limited editions" characteristic positions the entire Vegueros brand as an "everyday cigar".
What the Chinese-Speaking World Should Know About Vegueros
For cigar players in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, there are several important facts:
-
Vegueros is the value-for-money champion of "Cuban handmade long-filler under €5/stick": in this segment, Vegueros has no competitor. It is more refined than short-filler Quintero and much less expensive than Cohiba/Montecristo. It is the first choice for players who "want a long-filler Cuban experience but have a limited budget".
-
Mañanitas is the first choice for a "20 minute Cuban experience": many office workers do not have time to finish a 60+ minute cigar. Vegueros Mañanitas allows a complete experience of Cuban tobacco-leaf flavor within 20-25 minutes - to be enjoyed with coffee before work in the morning.
-
The metal tin packaging is a key identifier: all Vegueros are packed in metal tins (16-count). Anything claimed to be "Vegueros in a wooden box" is not a current product - unless it is an old 1996-2013 version, in which case one should be careful about whether it is truly an aged version (extremely rare on the market).
-
Entretiempos = an inexpensive version of the Petit Edmundo format: if you want to appreciate a Montecristo Petit Edmundo but feel it is too expensive, Vegueros Entretiempos is an alternative with exactly the same format and a much lower price. Of course, the flavor is more direct and less rounded.
-
Identify the Pinar del Río origin: all Vegueros are marked with Pinar del Río as the place of production (not Havana). This is a point of difference between the brand and other Cuban brands, and also a key identifier.
-
The exclusive format of Centrofinos: the Robusto-Extra shape is an exclusive format not used by any other Cuban brand - meaning that when you appreciate a Vegueros Centrofinos, you are appreciating the only cigar of this size within the Habanos system.
Why Vegueros Is "The Cigar Truly Dedicated to Unsung Heroes"
Vegueros is not a cigar for showing off. It does not have the luxury halo of Cohiba, the mystique of Trinidad, or the rarity of La Gloria Cubana.
It is a true "tribute cigar" - a tribute to the tobacco farmers who bend over every day in the fields of Pinar del Río, passing down their craft through generations while being forgotten by history. With every Vegueros you appreciate, what you experience is not just tobacco leaves, but the result of 18 months of labor in which a veguero handled the plant 150 times.
For beginners, Vegueros Mañanitas is the most affordable entry point into the "true flavor of Pinar del Río tobacco leaves".
For seasoned connoisseurs, Vegueros is the smartest choice for an "everyday Cuban cigar" - one does not need to spend heavily on Cohiba Behike every time, yet can still maintain the high quality of handmade long-filler.
For Cuban factory-director-level players, Vegueros has two more unique values:
- It is the cigar industry's most complete "direct from origin" brand - the tobacco is grown in Pinar del Río, rolled in Pinar del Río, and named after the tobacco farmers of Pinar del Río. This connection of "land and cigar as one" is unmatched.
- It is the only brand in the cigar industry named after "unsung heroes" - while all other brands commemorate founders, merchants, generals, and royalty, Vegueros commemorates the generations of farmers who go down to the fields before daybreak every day. This humility itself is value.
That Francisco Donatién factory, built in 1868, once a hospital and once a prison, rolls each Vegueros today with the sweat of countless vegueros from two centuries of Pinar del Río history.
