Standing Firm Before Castro

After the 1959 Revolution, Don Alejandro was one of the few tobacco farmers able to keep an independent farm -- most tobacco growers were forced to join cooperatives. Legend says he stood his ground in front of Fidel Castro -- and that backbone allowed him to preserve the independence of the family farm.

This is why, in 1997, Habanos created a brand in his name -- a historic tribute by a socialist state to a "private tobacco farmer."

Before 1997: The Tobacco Farmer Behind the Scenes

Before 1997, Robaina's tobacco was mainly used as wrapper leaf for "other major cigar brands" -- Cohiba, Hoyo de Monterrey, and others all used wrapper from the Robaina farm.

So in reality: many people had smoked "Robaina tobacco" without knowing it was grown by Robaina.

The 1997 Vegas Robaina brand transformed Robaina from a "behind-the-scenes tobacco farmer" into a "front-stage star."

From the 1990s onward, Robaina was appointed by the Cuban government as a "cigar industry ambassador", frequently traveling abroad to represent the Cuban cigar industry. Pilgrimages to his farm became a key itinerary item for industry VIPs visiting Cuba.

2010: The End of an Era

Don Alejandro Robaina passed away in April 2010 at the age of 91 -- the end of an era in the cigar world. The title "Godfather of Cuban Tobacco" went with him.

But the Vegas Robaina brand continues to this day, and every box still bears Don Alejandro's portrait -- a rare case in the cigar industry where "the founder's portrait remains on the packaging to this day."

In his later years, his grandson Hiroshi Robaina took over the farm -- maintaining the high standards his grandfather had built over 80+ years. "Hiroshi" is a Japanese name -- reflecting the Robaina family's multicultural background.

Maestros RE España 2007 (Gorditos 50×141mm, 20,000 boxes × 10 numbered cigars) -- the first Edición Regional in the brand's history -- Spanish market (Madrid was where the brand was presented in 1997, giving it special significance).
