The Origin of a Double Registration
Saint Luis Rey was first registered in Havana in 1940 by Zamora y Guerra Co. (located at Calle Maximo Gómez No. 180 or No. 810). In the same year, two British tobacco importers, Nathan Silverstone and Michael De Keyser, re-registered the name "Saint Luis Rey."
This double-registration detail later became the most disputed part of the brand's history - Habanos official records identify Zamora y Guerra as the original registrant, but the actual operation of the brand was led by the British.
The Two Mysteries Behind the Name
There are two competing theories about the brand name:
Theory One: Thornton Wilder's Novel
It commemorates the American writer Thornton Wilder's 1927 novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey - a story investigating the tragedy of a bridge collapse in Peru that killed five people.
It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928 and was adapted into films three times, in 1928, 1944, and 2004. As a brand name, it is a strange choice (given the tragic theme), so this theory has been questioned.
Theory Two: A Town in Vuelta Abajo (More Likely)
It commemorates the town of San Luis in Cuba's Vuelta Abajo region (a tobacco town known for producing top-grade wrapper leaf).
"Rey" means "king" - "King of San Luis."
From the perspective of tobacco studies, the town of San Luis in Vuelta Abajo is famous for top-grade wrapper leaf - for a Cuban cigar brand, this naming logic is far more reasonable than a tragic novel.
But both theories still coexist today.
The Longest Exclusivity Record in the Cigar Industry
The longest exclusive distribution agreement in the cigar industry: in the 1940s, Cubatabaco signed an agreement with the British importer N.R. Silverstone Cigar Limited (owned by Michael de Keyser and Nathan Silverstone) - Saint Luis Rey was distributed exclusively in the United Kingdom by NR Silverstone and sold only in the British market.
This exclusivity agreement survived the 1953 Cuban Revolution - it was even renewed in 1960. From 1960 to 1992, for a full 32 years, Saint Luis Rey was sold only in the British market.
Including the 1940-1960 period, the brand was sold only in the British market for a full 53 years - this is the longest single-market exclusivity in the history of the cigar industry. Other Cuban brands had long since been distributed worldwide.
Even more unique: Saint Luis Rey was the only British-market cigar brand not imported by Hunters & Frankau - all other Cuban brands in the UK were imported exclusively by H&F, but Saint Luis Rey was exclusive to NR Silverstone. This unique identity lasted for 53 years (1940-1993).
1993: Finally Going Global
In 1993, Habanos S.A. finally opened global distribution - ending 53 years of British exclusivity.
From 1993, Hunters & Frankau took over UK distribution (Saint Luis Rey did not formally enter the H&F catalogue until 2003). In 1994, Pacific Cigar Company became the first company to import Saint Luis Rey into Asia (Hong Kong).
Only from then did Saint Luis Rey truly become a global brand - joining the global market more than 30 years later than other Cuban brands.
Frank Sinatra's Cigar
Frank Sinatra (The Voice) was a devoted enthusiast of the Saint Luis Rey Lonsdale - one of the Cuban cigars most often associated with "Ol' Blue Eyes."
For enthusiasts who love Sinatra culture, Saint Luis Rey is essential to collect. The Voice's signature cigar between performances in Las Vegas - it carries special meaning for those who love both cigar and jazz culture.
James Coburn (actor and star of The Saint) was also a famous Saint Luis Rey enthusiast - one of the representatives of cigar culture in Hollywood's golden age.
Flavor: Powerful and Deep
The Saint Luis Rey flavor profile: medium-strong/medium-full to full strength - one of the more intense schools among Cuban cigars.
Characteristic flavors: spice, earth, power, depth, leather, roasted meat, and a light coffee finish. Stronger than Hoyo de Monterrey, slightly softer than Bolívar.
Today, Saint Luis Rey is produced in Havana at the Briones Montoto Factory (the Romeo y Julieta factory) - the same factory as Romeo y Julieta and Rafael González.
All Vuelta Abajo + Semi Vuelta tobacco leaf - Semi Vuelta is relatively uncommon and is a characteristic of the brand. All Cuban Saint Luis Rey cigars are "totalmente a mano con tripa larga" (fully handmade with long filler).
Wrapper characteristics: maduro (dark brown) to very dark maduro - smooth in color, with a slight sheen. It is among the darker Cuban wrapper shades.
Flagship Product: Regios Carries the Brand
Saint Luis Rey Regios (5" × 48, vitola: Hermoso No.4) - the brand's flagship Robusto, the only regular-production model still continuously produced today (by the early 21st century, the regular series had been reduced to this single model). A revised edition was reissued in 2018. 2017 Cigar Journal Cigar of the Year - one of the brand's highest honors.
Saint Luis Rey Lonsdale (6.5" × 42, vitola: Cervantes) - Frank Sinatra's favorite format. It is one of the iconic cigars in the brand's history. The Voice's signature cigar between performances in Las Vegas.
Saint Luis Rey Double Coronas (7⅝" × 49, vitola: Prominentes) - released in 2001 to replace a version planned in the late 1980s but never realized. Ultimately discontinued in 2013 - causing the brand to lose one of its largest flagship formats. The reason: Habanos reorganized the Prominentes format for more important brands (Hoyo de Monterrey, Partagás, Punch, Ramón Allones).
Saint Luis Rey Serie A (5⅔" × 46, vitola: Coronas Gordas) - a Coronas Gordas format, once one of the important formats in the brand's history. It is now discontinued.
Edición Regional: Strengthening Its Presence
Within the Habanos system, Saint Luis Rey is a more niche brand - production has always been low, and by the early 21st century its regular series had been reduced to only the Regios. But the RE program strengthened the brand's presence - since 2009, there have been 6 RE releases:
- Pacificos RE Asia Pacifico 2009 (Pirámides 52 × 156mm) - the first Edición Regional in the brand's history, and Asia Pacific was the first region selected. It carries special meaning for enthusiasts in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia - "our own" RE
- Inca RE Peru (Petit Robustos, 1,000 cabinets × 50) - only 1,000 cabinets of 50 - one of the rarest RE releases in the brand's history. "Inca" commemorates Peru's Inca culture
- Herfing RE Medio Oriente 2019 (Vintage 10-count box) - an RE for the Middle Eastern market
- Pura Vida RE Costa Rica 2020 - a Costa Rican RE released in 2020. "Pura Vida" is Costa Rica's national greeting (pure life)
