01
Finding

Founded in 1875 by Inocencio Álvarez Rodríguez, an immigrant from Asturias (northern Spain), and his partner José "Manín" García at 87 San Rafael Street in Havana, it was initially a small factory.

02
Finding

After Churchill's second visit to Havana in 1946, he formally visited the Romeo y Julieta factory and thereafter became the brand's most famous supporter. The original 7" × 47 specification was called "Clemenceau", and was later renamed "Churchill" to commemorate the prime minister.

03
Finding

The "Churchill" vitola (7" × 47 / 178mm × 18.65mm ring gauge) became a standard size name in the global cigar industry, and is one of the few cigar specifications named after an individual. Today, brands around the world all produce the Churchill size, but it originated with Romeo y Julieta.

04
Finding

Churchill (7" × 47, vitola de galera: Julieta No.2) - the brand flagship, a 90-minute experience, listed by Cigar Aficionado as one of the "25 must-collect Cuba cigars".

05
Finding

The brand name comes from Shakespeare's 1597 play Romeo and Juliet. Because of the lector reading tradition in Cuban cigar factories, this play was one of the stories torcedores most liked to hear at the time, and the brand was named after it.

06
Finding

In 1903, José "Pepín" Rodríguez Fernández (former manager of the Cabañas factory) acquired Romeo y Julieta through Rodríguez, Argüelles y Cía, bringing the brand onto the world stage.

07
Finding

Winston Churchill's love of Cuban cigars began in 1895 - when, as a young cavalry officer, he was sent to observe the Cuba-Spain conflict, fell in love with Cuban cigar culture in Havana, and became a lifelong enthusiast.

08
Finding

Between 1885 and 1900, Romeo y Julieta won major awards at multiple international appreciation exhibitions, receiving a total of four gold medals. These gold medals are still printed on the brand logo today, making it the only Cuban cigar brand whose logo design is based on "historical medals".

09
Finding

Churchill could smoke 10 cigars a day, often chewing the end of the cigar while smoking. London's Cabinet War Rooms still displays a half-smoked Romeo y Julieta cigar smoked by Churchill.

10
Finding

The tobacco leaves for the Cuban version of Romeo y Julieta come from the Vuelta Abajo region of Pinar del Río province. Positioned as "mild to medium-bodied", it is one of the most balanced and elegant brands among Cuban cigars, and is regarded as a representative of gentlemanly taste.

11
Finding

Pepín Rodríguez was one of the first in the cigar industry to offer a "custom cigar band" service - at its peak, producing as many as 20,000 types of personalized cigar bands at the same time, including exclusive versions for royalty, political figures, and nobility.

12
Finding

Pepín Rodríguez was one of the cigar industry's earliest "global marketing masters". He personally rode on horseback across Europe and the Americas to promote the brand, and named his own racehorse "Julieta" to compete in horse races in various places, creating one of the cigar industry's most talked-about marketing activities of the time.

13
Finding

After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the cigar industry was nationalized in the 1960s, and Romeo y Julieta, like other old Cuban brands, split into two independent brands: the Cuban Habanos S.A. version (sold globally) and the Dominican Altadis version (focused on the U.S. market).

14
Finding

After being rejected, Pepín built in Havana an almost exact replica of Palazzo Capuleti (including Juliet's balcony), about 100 meters from the Havana waterfront promenade. Two German Shepherds were also kept in front of the building, named "Romeo" and "Julieta".

15
Finding

Short Churchills (4⅞" × 50, vitola: Robusto) - a newer Robusto-size Churchill, highly popular among Chinese enthusiasts because the time is shorter (45-60 minutes) while retaining the flagship flavor.

16
Finding

Romeo y Julieta is ranked with Montecristo and Cohiba among the 'three major global best-selling 古巴 brands'. In 歐洲 (especially 英國 and 西班牙) and Chinese-speaking circles, it has the broadest customer base and is regarded as an 'elegant gentleman's cigar'.

17
Finding

Pepín was extremely fascinated by the plot of Romeo and Juliet and once attempted to purchase Palazzo Capuleti, Juliet's family residence in the play, in Verona, Italy, planning to convert it into a cigar salon. The local city council immediately rejected the proposal.

18
Finding

Classic flavor description: cedar, cream, leather, subtle sweet spices, and a balanced woody finish - milder than Cohiba and more elegant than Bolívar, an "elegant style" Cuban cigar between the two.

19
Finding

In the early 20th century, Romeo y Julieta was famous for "figurados" (shaped cigars), especially perfectos and pirámides. It was believed at the time that the brand had produced more than 1,000 different cigar shapes - making it the Cuban brand with the greatest variety of shapes at the time.

20
Finding

In 2025, to celebrate the brand's 150th anniversary, the Dominican version launched the Romeo y Julieta 150th Anniversary series; the Cuban version introduced Reservas (specially aged) and the Romeo Amantes commemorative edition at the 2025 Habanos Festival.

21
Finding

Inocencio Álvarez had worked for many years at the H. Upmann factory in his early years, rising from apprentice to a management position. This experience laid the foundation for his deep understanding of tobacco leaf and craftsmanship.

22
Finding

A Brand That Stepped Out of Shakespeare's Stage

If Cohiba is the cigar of revolution and Montecristo is the cigar of literature, Romeo y Julieta is the cigar of drama and gentlemanly style. Its naming story, its flagship size, and its global marketing legend are all closely tied to a Shakespearean play and a British prime minister.

The story begins in 1875. Two young immigrants from Asturias in northern Spain, Inocencio Álvarez Rodríguez and José "Manín" García, founded a small factory at 87 San Rafael Street in Havana. Inocencio had spent many years working at the H. Upmann factory, rising from apprentice to a managerial role. That experience gave him the confidence and technical foundation to create his own brand.

They named the brand Romeo y Julieta, following one of the most romantic traditions in the Cuban cigar industry. At the time, Havana cigar factories commonly had the tradition of a lector, or reader. Many torcedores had limited literacy, so the lector would read novels, poetry, and plays aloud to them each day. Shakespeare's 1597 tragedy Romeo and Juliet was one of the most popular plays in the factories, making the name a natural choice.

Four Gold Medals: The Golden Age of 1885-1900

After its founding, the brand quickly gained recognition. Between 1885 and 1900, Romeo y Julieta won major awards at several international evaluation exhibitions, earning a total of four gold medals. These medals are still printed on every Romeo y Julieta cigar band today. It is the only Cuban cigar brand whose visual identity is built around historical medals, a tradition that has remained unchanged for 140 years.

In 1886, partner Manín García left the company, and Inocencio Álvarez continued operating it independently. In 1885, he arranged for his son-in-law Donato Argüelles to join the firm in a managerial position.

Pepín Rodríguez: One of the Cigar Industry's Earliest "Global Marketing Masters"

In 1903, former Cabañas factory manager José "Pepín" Rodríguez Fernández acquired Romeo y Julieta through the company Rodríguez, Argüelles y Cía. After taking over, Pepín brought this local brand to the world. His marketing methods were, for the cigar industry of the time, almost in a different league.

He personally traveled on horseback through Europe and the Americas to promote the brand, appearing at luxury hotels, racetracks, and aristocratic salons in every important city. He even named his own racehorse "Julieta" and entered it in races in different places, turning every race into an opportunity for brand visibility.

But two things truly made Romeo y Julieta legendary:

First, his obsession with the play itself was nearly extreme. He once tried to buy Palazzo Capuleti, the supposed family residence of Juliet in Verona, Italy, with the plan of turning it into a cigar salon. The local city council immediately rejected the proposal. After being refused, he did something even more unusual: he built an almost exact replica of Palazzo Capuleti in Havana, about 100 meters from the Havana seawall, reportedly even copying Juliet's balcony. In front of the building, he kept two German Shepherds, named "Romeo" and "Julieta."

Second, he created the service of "custom cigar bands." Pepín was among the first in the cigar industry to offer customers personally designed cigar bands. The personal crests of royalty, political figures, and celebrities could all be printed on Romeo y Julieta cigar bands. At its peak, the company was producing as many as 20,000 personalized cigar bands at the same time, meaning that nearly every important customer could have a cigar band of their own.

Churchill and a Century-Long Bond with a Cigar

It is impossible to discuss Romeo y Julieta without mentioning Winston Churchill. The British prime minister's love of Cuban cigars began in 1895, when he was sent as a young cavalry officer to observe the Cuba-Spain conflict. In Havana, he became fascinated by Cuban cigar culture, a connection that remained with him for life.

Churchill could smoke 10 cigars a day, often chewing the end of the cigar as he smoked. London's Cabinet War Rooms still display a half-smoked Romeo y Julieta cigar once smoked by Churchill. It is both a relic of World War II history and one of the most treasured mementos in cigar culture.

In 1946, Churchill visited Havana for the second time and formally visited the Romeo y Julieta factory. The brand originally had a 7" x 47 size named Clemenceau in honor of French prime minister Georges Clemenceau. To celebrate Churchill's visit, the factory renamed this size "Churchill".

This naming changed the entire cigar industry.

"Churchill": A Cigar Format Named After a Person

The Churchill vitola (7" x 47 / 178mm x 18.65mm ring gauge) became a standard size name used throughout the global cigar industry. Today, brands from Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey to Dominican Davidoff, Honduran Camacho, and Nicaraguan Padrón all produce Churchill formats, but the name originated with Romeo y Julieta.

It is one of the very few cigar formats named after an individual, a unique honor in the cigar industry.

Romeo y Julieta later developed a full Churchill family:

  • Churchill (7" x 47, vitola: Julieta No.2) — the flagship original, about 90 minutes of appreciation
  • Short Churchills (4⅞" x 50, vitola: Robusto) — a Churchill in Robusto format, especially familiar among Chinese-speaking enthusiasts, about 45-60 minutes
  • Wide Churchills (5⅛" x 55, vitola: Montesco) — a thick-bodied Churchill with a 55 ring gauge, introduced as a 2014 Edición Limitada and later made a regular-production item
  • Petit Churchills (4" x 50, vitola: Petit Robusto) — the shortest expression of the Churchill flavor profile, about 30-40 minutes

Revolution: The Birth of Two Romeo y Julietas

Pepín passed away in 1954 at the age of 88. By then, Romeo y Julieta was already one of the best-known cigar brands in the world. But only five years later, the 1959 Cuban Revolution changed the fate of all historic Cuban brands.

After the cigar industry was nationalized in the 1960s, Romeo y Julieta, like other old Cuban brands, split into two independent brands:

  • Cuban Habanos S.A. version: sold worldwide and still produced by the Cuban government
  • Dominican Altadis version: focused on the U.S. market because of the U.S. embargo on Cuban goods

The history of the Dominican version was winding. Production resumed in La Romana in the early 1970s, first made by the Quesada family at the MATASA factory for nearly 20 years. In 1998, after Hollco-Rohr was divided into Altadis U.S.A., production moved to the Tabacalera de García factory, where it continues today. Altadis is now owned by the British group Imperial Brands, the same parent company associated with Habanos S.A.

The Cuban Version: A Representative of the Elegant Style

Cuban Romeo y Julieta tobacco comes from the Vuelta Abajo region of Pinar del Río Province, the same top-tier growing area associated with Cohiba and Montecristo. Its flavor positioning, however, is entirely different:

  • Cohiba: rich, complex, authoritative
  • Montecristo: balanced, leather, cinnamon-like sweetness
  • Romeo y Julieta: medium to mild, cedar, cream, and an elegant woody finish

Among Cuban cigars, this is the brand most often associated with the "gentlemanly style". It is milder than Cohiba and more elegant than Bolívar, occupying a balanced position between richness and delicacy.

Flagship Products: 5 Lines You Should Know

In addition to the Churchill family, Romeo y Julieta has several classic representative releases:

  • Belicoso (5½" x 52, vitola: Campana) — a classic Belicoso shape, a small pyramid form, and one of the brand's most highly regarded figurados
  • Cedro de Luxe No.1 (6½" x 42, vitola: Cervantes, Lonsdale) — a classic Lonsdale format, with each cigar wrapped in a cedar sheet
  • Romeo No.2 (5⅛" x 42, vitola: Mareva, Petit Corona) — a shorter-format entry reference
  • Exhibición No.4 (5" x 48, vitola: Hermoso No.4) — a medium-ring Corona Extra
  • Churchill Reserva Cosecha 2008 (released in 2011) — the brand's first Reserva-grade cigar, limited worldwide to 5,000 numbered boxes; all tobacco was harvested in 2008, aged for 3 years, and then rolled

What the Chinese-Speaking World Should Know About Romeo y Julieta

For cigar enthusiasts in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, several facts are important:

  1. Short Churchills are especially familiar among Chinese-speaking enthusiasts: They offer the Churchill experience in Robusto format, and their 45-60 minute duration suits the length of many social gatherings. Combined with a medium-to-mild flavor profile, they are often seen in business dinner and cigar gathering contexts.

  2. The Cuban and Dominican versions differ greatly: The Cuban version centers on "elegance," while the Dominican version, such as Reserva Real, uses a Nicaraguan blend and is richer. Those found in Taiwan duty-free shops and Hong Kong are mostly the Cuban version; those found within the United States are entirely the Dominican version.

  3. Churchill is not "the cigar Churchill smoked," but "a size named after Churchill": The format was named after Churchill after his 1946 factory visit, but he had been smoking Romeo y Julieta since 1895. The size Churchill himself actually preferred remains debated. Some historians believe he most often smoked shorter Belicoso or Petit Coronas, because they were better suited to intermittent smoking during long working hours.

  4. 150th anniversary (2025): 2025 marks the 150th anniversary of Romeo y Julieta. The Dominican version released the Romeo y Julieta 150th Anniversary series, while the Cuban version introduced Reservas, specially aged releases, and the commemorative Romeo Amantes at the 2025 Habanos Festival. These anniversary editions are likely to become a focus of collector attention in the future.

  5. The gold medal emblem helps with authentication: All Cuban Romeo y Julieta cigar bands carry gold medal marks, representing the four medals won between 1885 and 1900. Counterfeits often show deviations in the number, placement, or typography of the medals, making them an important clue for identification.

Why Romeo y Julieta Is Often Considered a Major Entry Point into Cigars

For new Chinese-speaking cigar enthusiasts, Romeo y Julieta is often considered an ideal "first Cuban brand":

  • Moderate strength: It is less likely to overwhelm a newcomer than a first puff of Cohiba Behike
  • Direct flavor profile: Cedar, cream, and light sweetness are easy for beginners to recognize
  • Market accessibility: Petit Churchills and Short Churchills are generally positioned more accessibly than Cohiba Robustos
  • Rich history: The Churchill story means the context is not only about cigars, but also about 150 years of gentlemanly culture

For experienced aficionados, Reserva Cosecha 2008 and the 2025 150th-anniversary limited releases are notable collector references. For Cuban factory directors, this is the only brand in the world whose personally named format became an industry standard. That honor is something even Cohiba does not have.
