Among all historical figures with an inseparable bond with cigars, no one changed the cultural meaning of cigars more completely than Winston Churchill. His name is forever commemorated by a cigar size -- the globally recognized factory vitola "Churchill" (approximately 7 inches x 47 ring gauge), named after him. This prime minister, who led Britain against the Nazis during the darkest moment of the twentieth century, is estimated to have smoked about 200,000 cigars in his lifetime. He never believed that smoking cigars hindered his career; instead, he believed cigars gave him a rhythm for thought and a pillar of spirit.

Yet Churchill's cigar story is far richer than the size named after him. What exactly began at the moment he lit his first Habano in Cuba in 1895?

1. Cuba in 1895: The Birthplace of His First Habano

On November 30, 1874, Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill was born at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England. His father was the second son of the 3rd Duke of Marlborough, and his mother was a New York socialite from the United States.

In 1895, the 21-year-old Churchill traveled to Cuba as a military observer, witnessing the Spanish Empire's campaign to suppress the local independence movement, while also serving as a correspondent for London's The Daily Telegraph. It was during this trip to Cuba that Churchill first tasted an authentic Habano.

Cuba at that time stood at the peak of the world cigar industry. The tobacco leaves of Vuelta Abajo had already established an unshakable position in European high society, and the factories spread throughout Havana -- Romeo y Julieta, Partagas, H. Upmann -- were each producing Habanos that captivated gentlemen of the Victorian era. Churchill smoked his first one at an officers' banquet in Havana, and from then on there was no turning back.

2. Romeo y Julieta: Churchill's Lifelong First Choice

Churchill's preferred cigar brand was Romeo y Julieta. Historical documents and the research of cigar scholars consistently show that Romeo y Julieta formed the core of the brands he smoked daily. He also liked the now-defunct La Aroma de Cuba (another old Havana brand he admired).

In his daily appreciation, Churchill particularly favored Romeo y Julieta Cedros de Luxe No.1 -- an individually wrapped Corona format covered in a thin sheet of cedar. The cedar aroma and the fruity, creamy character of the tobacco itself formed a delicate balance on the palate.

Churchill's daily cigar consumption, according to historical records, was about 8 to 10 cigars per day, and even more at his peak. Scholars estimate that he smoked about 200,000 cigars in his lifetime -- a number that is itself a historical marvel.

3. The Birth of the "Churchill" vitola: A Format Named After Him, Though He Was Not a Regular Smoker of It

Churchill's name became forever embedded in world cigar culture through a cigar size, but the naming process was more circuitous than most people imagine.

In factory terminology, the original name of this format was Julieta No.2 -- the factory format code of the Romeo y Julieta brand. At Romeo y Julieta, this cigar initially circulated on a small scale under the name "Clemenceau" (named after the French statesman Georges Clemenceau). Later, in the 1940s, it gradually became widely known as the "Churchill", with the Romeo y Julieta factory using the name to pay tribute to the British prime minister during World War II.

According to historical research, however, Churchill himself did not usually smoke this large format named after him -- he more often smoked the smaller Cedros de Luxe No.1. This detail carries a certain humor: the world's best-known "Churchill format" among cigar enthusiasts was not actually one he primarily smoked.

4. H. Upmann's Sir Winston Tribute

In addition to Romeo y Julieta, H. Upmann also left an enduring Churchill mark. The H. Upmann brand under Habanos S.A. named a large-format cigar Sir Winston, as an official tribute to this lifelong cigar lover.

Sir Winston is the strongest and most structurally complex cigar in the H. Upmann series -- dominated by earthy notes, coffee, and leather, entirely different from the creamy fruitiness of Romeo y Julieta. This contrast illustrates the breadth of Churchill's cigar palate: he appreciated light, fruity daily cigars, and could also occasionally taste powerful large formats.

Today, appreciating H. Upmann Sir Winston at W Cigar Bar is one of the most direct ways to pay tribute to this history.

5. The Smoke of World War II: The Cigar as a Symbol of Political Will

During World War II, Churchill's cigar image became a symbol of Britain's will to resist. The famous black-and-white portrait taken by photographer Yousuf Karsh in 1941 -- Churchill glaring straight into the camera, his expression steely -- is said to have been so striking because the photographer took the cigar from his mouth without warning, producing that vivid look of anger. The photograph became one of the most famous political portraits of the twentieth century, and the cigar that was taken away became the eternal protagonist of this anecdote.

During meetings in the underground command rooms (Cabinet War Rooms), at the Atlantic Conference with Roosevelt, and in tense moments of the Combined Chiefs of Staff meetings -- Churchill always kept a cigar in hand. He believed cigars were not merely enjoyment, but rhythm: the smoke he exhaled at intervals helped him maintain a steady cadence while thinking.

6. The Final Curtain at 90: Seventy Years of Cigars

Winston Churchill passed away on January 24, 1965, at the age of 90. That a lifelong cigar smoker lived to 90 is itself a counterintuitive piece of history. He witnessed the golden age of the Cuban cigar industry, and at the age of 87 also saw the 1962 United States embargo against Cuba announced, watching with his own eyes as Habanos disappeared from the American market.

From the first puff of smoke in Cuba in 1895 to his final curtain in 1965, Churchill's cigar years spanned a full 70 years. His life story is one of the most persuasive narratives of gentleman's club culture: cigars do not shorten life; they give life a more deliberate rhythm.

Conclusion

Winston Churchill's cigar legend is a story about "rhythm". To him, cigars were not a display of status, but a tool for thought and a ritual of will. The 45 to 60 minutes in which each Romeo y Julieta burned were the time he used to draft speeches, formulate military strategies, or simply sit in silent contemplation.

When we light a Churchill-format cigar at W Cigar Bar today, what we continue is an unspoken philosophy left by this British statesman born in 1874: things that truly matter are worth burning slowly.
