The Essential Differences Between Cigars and Cigarettes
Cigars are not meant to be inhaled into the lungs.
If you are switching over from cigarettes, this is the first concept you must establish -- the nicotine concentration of cigars is 5-10 times higher than that of cigarettes. Inhaling into the lungs can be very uncomfortable, causing dizziness and nausea.
Cigars are appreciated through the taste buds, tongue, oral mucosa, and nasal finish.

How to Hold a Cigar
Use the Thumb + Index Finger + Middle Finger
Similar to holding a pen, gently hold the cigar with three fingers. Do not grip the cigar with your whole hand -- that will heat the cigar unevenly and affect the burn rate.
Do Not Keep It Clenched at the Corner of Your Mouth
A cigarette can be held at the corner of the mouth while talking or doing other things -- a cigar requires full attention. After each draw, move the cigar away from your mouth and place it in the ashtray or hold it in your hand.

The Correct Way to Draw
Slowly Draw into the Mouth
Draw slowly for 3-5 seconds -- let the cigar smoke fill your mouth, but do not inhale it into your throat.
Hold It in the Mouth for 2-3 Seconds
Let your taste buds capture the layers of the cigar:
- Tip of the tongue: sweetness, creamy floral notes
- Sides of the tongue: spicy pepper, cedar
- Back of the tongue: deep coffee, leather, earth
Nasal Finish
Slowly exhale through the nose (not through the mouth) -- when the cigar smoke exits through the nasal cavity, it creates a "nasal finish", which is the most essential moment in cigar appreciation.
Many beginners are afraid to do this step, but it is the key to entering the world of cigars -- without the nasal finish, you cannot taste 70% of a cigar's layers.

Proper Smoking Interval
One Draw Every 60-90 Seconds
Do not draw continuously -- a cigar needs proper intervals to let the combustion temperature come down. Drawing continuously will make the cigar "overheat", producing bitterness and irritation.
Do Not Let the Cigar Go Out for More Than 5 Minutes
If you do not draw for more than 5 minutes, the cigar will naturally go out. Relighting will degrade the flavor -- so maintaining a steady rhythm is important.
Appreciation Stages (Three-Part Structure)
A top-level cigar is usually divided into three sections, with clear changes in flavor:
First Third (Front 1/3) -- Opening
Usually lighter, more floral, and creamier -- this is the cigar's "greeting stage".
Second Third (Middle 1/3) -- Climax
Strength and complexity reach their peak -- this is the core stage where the cigar expresses its craftsmanship. For most top-level cigars, the "highest-scoring moment" is in this section.
Third Third (Final 1/3) -- Finish
Strength increases, spice deepens, and there may be slight bitterness -- a good cigar will "finish beautifully" and will not become bitter and difficult to smoke.

When Should You Stop?
Stop When 1-2 cm Remain
Do not smoke until it burns your fingers -- the final 1-2 cm is the most concentrated "base" of the cigar. It has already lost most of its flavor and leaves mostly bitterness.
Do Not Stub It Out
When a cigar is finished, it should be left naturally in the ashtray to go out -- do not stub it out like a cigarette, as that will release an unpleasant odor.

5 Reminders for Beginners
- Do not smoke on an empty stomach -- it is easy to get dizzy
- Do not smoke in an enclosed space -- a good cigar needs a good environment
- Do not drink coffee while smoking -- it will overpower the flavors
- Do not be afraid to go slowly -- 60-90 minutes for a top-level cigar is completely normal
- Do not be afraid to ask -- come to W Cigar Bar and ask Cigar Prince anytime

FAQ Q&A
Q1: Will I get dizzy the first time I smoke a cigar?
Yes, especially on an empty stomach or if you choose one that is too strong. Beginners should choose mild to medium strength (such as Macanudo Café, Davidoff Signature 2000, Cohiba Siglo I) + eat a full meal before smoking + prepare a sweet drink (orange juice / cola). If you feel dizzy: stop smoking immediately, eat chocolate or drink a sweet beverage to replenish sugar, sit down for 5 minutes, and it will ease. Most important: choose the right strength; do not try to prove yourself.
Q2: If I need to leave halfway through a cigar, can I put it down?
- Come back within 5 minutes: leaving it in the ashtray is fine. When you return, take 2-3 gentle draws to restart the burn
- 5-15 minutes: the flavor will noticeably deteriorate, the ash will cool down, and it will need to be relit
- More than 15 minutes: give up on this cigar and do not force yourself to continue. Next time, smoke a new one instead; that shows more respect to the cigar than smoking a ruined one
Q3: Should I tap off the cigar ash?
No. This is the most common cigarette habit that beginners misapply. Ash naturally falling at 1-2 cm is the most beautiful -- it means the burn is even and the tobacco quality is good. Top Cuban cigars can even maintain 3-5 cm of long ash without falling. Deliberately tapping off the ash will make the combustion temperature unstable and cause bitterness to appear earlier.
Q4: Can I drink beer while smoking a cigar?
You can, but it will compete with the flavors -- the bitterness of beer will cover the subtle layers of the cigar. The best pairings are brown spirits (single malt whisky, Cognac, aged rum) or strong black coffee. For beginners who do not drink alcohol: sparkling water, Pu'er tea, and single-origin pour-over coffee all pair well.
Q5: Are top-level cigars always better to smoke than cheaper cigars?
Not necessarily. A $1,500 Padrón 1964 Anniversary may be more enjoyable for some people than a $5,000 Cohiba Behike 56 -- because Padrón has balanced strength, a steady rhythm, and is not easy to smoke into muddiness. The layers of Behike require the taste buds of an experienced aficionado to unlock. A good cigar is one that "suits you at this moment", not "the most expensive one". At W Cigar Bar, we recommend different cigars based on your condition that day (tired / excited / contemplative), not based on price.
