The core appreciation technique for advanced cigar enthusiasts: Three Thirds Tasting.
During the 60-90 minute appreciation process, every cigar goes through 3 distinctly different flavor stages. Only by learning to read these 3 thirds can one truly enter the world of cigar appreciation.
Cigar Prince Wilson Tsai offers a complete training method drawn from years of hands-on experience at W Cigar Bar.
Why Are There "Three Thirds"?
When a cigar burns, the Foot end undergoes layer-by-layer chemical changes:
- Combustion zone: high temperature (700-900°C), tobacco pyrolysis
- Heat-affected zone: medium temperature (200-400°C), sugar caramelization, oil volatilization
- Cold zone: room temperature, unaffected
As the cigar burns, these 3 zones gradually move toward the Cap end. Your tongue sequentially encounters the chemical products of tobacco leaves at different stages:
- First 1/3: burns through the outer tobacco leaves (Wrapper + upper Filler)
- Middle 1/3: burns into the core of the middle Filler blend
- Final 1/3: accumulated combustion products + burning into the lower Filler (highest strength)
This is not "mysticism"; it is a chemical progression determined by the physical structure of the cigar.
Complete Analysis of Three Thirds Tasting
First 1/3: The Opening
Time: Burned to the point where 2/3 remains (about 0-25 minutes)
Chemical state:
- Wrapper flavor is dominant
- Residual ammonia continues to volatilize
- Oils have not yet been fully released
Typical flavors:
- Cedar, cream, light floral aroma
- Nuts, light coffee
- Smoother, lower spiciness
Strength sensation:
- Usually softer
- Nicotine accumulation is not yet strong
- Suitable for "warming up and sensing brand characteristics"
Cigar Prince's observation:
- Cuban cigars: earthy tones + cedar
- Connecticut Shade: cream + floral aroma
- Maduro: dark chocolate + caramel

Middle 1/3: The Heart
Time: The middle burn stage (about 25-55 minutes)
Chemical state:
- Core zone of the Filler blend
- All layers of tobacco in the Liga fully unfold
- Oils are released evenly
Typical flavors:
- Flavor is the most complex, with the richest layering
- Multiple layers of tobacco release simultaneously
- The retronasal sweetness is strongest
Strength sensation:
- Reaches the cigar's "designed strength"
- Nicotine reaches peak blood concentration
- This is the core stage for cigar critics' scoring
Cigar Prince's observation:
- "The middle third is the true face of a cigar"
- Scoring mainly depends on the middle-third performance
- 90% of seasoned enthusiasts' subjective memory comes from the middle third
Final 1/3: The Finale
Time: Burned down to 5-7 cm remaining (about 55-90 minutes)
Chemical state:
- Accumulated combustion products (tar, tobacco oils)
- Lower Filler (strong tobaccos such as Ligero)
- Temperature may rise
Typical flavors:
- Strength rises and intensity increases
- Some cigars turn bitter, spicy, and sharp
- Deep flavors such as "soil and leather" may appear
Strength sensation:
- The strongest
- Dizziness and oral numbness may occur
- Most seasoned enthusiasts set the cigar down at this point
Cigar Prince's observation:
- "The final third is the cigar's ultimate test"
- Top-tier cigars can maintain flavor into the final third
- Mid-level cigars turn bitter in the final third
- "Observe when 5-7 cm remains, and set it down decisively if it turns bitter" is gentlemanly wisdom
Three Thirds Scoring System
Cigar critics such as Halfwheel and Cigar Aficionado all use three-thirds scoring:
Standard Three Thirds Scoring (100-point scale)
以三張卡片呈現雪茄前段暖身、中段核心複雜與後段力道考驗三段定位的核心結論圖
| Stage | Weight | Scoring items |
|---|---|---|
| First 1/3 | 25% | Opening flavor, burn, appearance |
| Middle 1/3 | 50% | Core complexity, layering, strength |
| Final 1/3 | 25% | Finale stability, bitterness control |
Cigar Prince's personal formula:
Total score = First 1/3 × 0.25 + Middle 1/3 × 0.5 + Final 1/3 × 0.25
The middle third carries 50% of the weight because the middle third best reflects a cigar's true quality.
Example Scoring (5+ years aged Cohiba Behike BHK 56)
First 1/3:
- Flavors: cedar, light honey, cream
- Burn: perfect
- Score: 92
Middle 1/3:
- Flavors: black coffee, leather, spice, nuts (complex)
- Retronasal sweetness: strong
- Score: 96
Final 1/3:
- Flavors: caramel, smoke, soil
- Persistence: does not turn bitter, strength is steady
- Score: 93
Total score: 92×0.25 + 96×0.5 + 93×0.25 = 94.25
Training Methods for Reading the Three Thirds
Training 1: Time Recording Method
Cigars 1-10:
Record flavor keywords at each time point:
- 0-5 minutes: ________
- 10 minutes: ________
- 20 minutes: ________
- 30 minutes: ________
- 40 minutes: ________
- 50 minutes: ________
- 60 minutes: ________
Goal: Discover the transition points you personally perceive. Usually, the cigar enters the middle third at 25-30 minutes and the final third at 55-60 minutes.
Training 2: Segmented Appreciation Method
Cigars 11-30:
Intentionally pause and evaluate each third:
- After finishing 1/3 -> pause for 30 seconds and score the first third
- After finishing 2/3 -> pause for 30 seconds and score the middle third
- After finishing the whole cigar -> score the final third + overall performance

Goal: Build the ability to score each third independently.
Training 3: Blind Three Thirds Method
Cigars 31+:
Do not look at the box code; smoke purely by perception:
- Judge the producing region from the first-third flavors (Cuba / Dominican Republic / Nicaragua)
- Judge the Wrapper type from the middle third
- Judge the strength level from the final third
Goal: Become a true seasoned enthusiast through blind tasting and interpretation.
Three Thirds Characteristics of Different Producing Regions
Cuban Habanos
- First third: cedar, earthiness, light honey
- Middle third: complex layering, leather, nuts, coffee (Cuban character)
- Final third: strength rises, deep soil note, not easy to turn bitter (top-tier)
Dominican Republic (Davidoff, Fuente)
- First third: cream, floral aroma, light sweetness
- Middle third: balance, nuts, light coffee
- Final third: stable, elegant finish
Nicaragua (Padrón, My Father)
- First third: spicy pepper, leather, deep coffee
- Middle third: intense, complex, heavy oiliness
- Final third: strength reaches its limit, may turn bitter (mid-level quality) / maintains itself (top-tier)
Failed Three Thirds: Common Problems
Problem 1: The First Third Turns Bitter
Cause: The cigar was stored too humid, or Toasting was insufficient Handling: Set it down and open a new cigar
整理雪茄三段判讀前段轉苦、中段平淡與後段嚴重轉苦三個常見問題與處理方向的提醒圖
Problem 2: The Middle Third Is Flat and Lacks Layering
Cause: The cigar is too dry, or the blend is imbalanced (mostly entry-level) Handling: Accept the brand characteristics and do not force it
Problem 3: The Final Third Turns Severely Bitter
Cause: Smoking pace is too fast, tar has accumulated Handling: Set it down when 5 cm remains; do not cling to it
Problem 4: The Three Thirds Show No Obvious Difference
Cause: Machine-made cigar, single-dimensional blend Handling: Move up to a higher cigar grade
Advanced Three Thirds: The "Appreciation Window"
Top seasoned enthusiasts identify the "best appreciation window" of each cigar:
- Cohiba Behike: the middle third at 30-50 minutes is the sweet spot
- Padrón 1964: the first third at 10-20 minutes is the most complex
- Liga Privada T52: the junction between the middle and final thirds at 40-50 minutes is the richest
This observation = the highest level of cigar appreciation.
Conclusion
Three Thirds Tasting is the structural framework of cigar appreciation. Once you learn it, you no longer "finish a cigar and only remember that you smoked it"; instead, you "clearly remember the journey of 3 flavor stages that this cigar went through".
