The biggest secret among Chinese cigar enthusiasts: not everyone drinks alcohol.
Religion, health, constitution, driving - being unable to drink alcohol does not mean you cannot pair something with a cigar.
Tea is the most natural pairing in Chinese cigar culture - it has the same effects of "flavor amplification" and "layered resonance" as rum and whisky, but without the burden of alcohol.
Cigar Prince Wilson Tsai has compiled a complete guide to 6 major types of tea x cigar pairings.
Why Can Tea Pair With Cigars?
3 reasons:
1. Tannin Echo
Tea leaves contain tea tannins (tannin), and cigar tobacco leaves contain tobacco tannins. When the two combine, they create a tannin synergy effect - the mouthfeel becomes rounder, and bitterness is reduced.
Red wine and whisky rely on barrel tannins to pair with cigars. Tea tannins are equally powerful.
2. Palate-Cleansing Ability
Tea can clear the tobacco oils from the mouth - allowing your palate to reset for the next puff of the cigar.
This is something alcohol cannot do - rum and whisky only "add flavor"; they do not "cleanse flavor".
3. No Alcohol Burden
When smoking a cigar after dinner, alcohol can make you drunk, while tea will not. Smoking 2-3 cigars will not make you drunk, and there will be no hangover the next day.

For gentlemen who value "maintaining their condition", business occasions, and health considerations - tea is the smarter choice.
6 Major Types of Tea x Cigar Pairings
Tea 1: Taiwan High Mountain Oolong (Dong Ding, Alishan, Lishan)
Tea Character: Fresh aroma, lingering sweetness, floral honey notes, obvious returning sweetness under the tongue Cigar Pairing: Cream / woody profile
- Cohiba Siglo I / II
- Hoyo de Monterrey series
- Macanudo Café
Why: Oolong floral aroma + cigar creaminess = soft yet richly layered. The most natural pairing for Taiwan's local culture. Brewing: 90°C water, 3 minutes, small teapot.
Tea 2: Wuyi Rock Tea (Da Hong Pao, Rougui, Shuixian)
Tea Character: Minerality, rock-bone floral aroma, deep returning sweetness, roasted aroma Cigar Pairing: Coffee / woody profile
- Montecristo No.2
- Romeo y Julieta Churchill
- H. Upmann Magnum 50
Why: The minerality of rock tea echoes the coffee and cocoa notes of cigars, while its roasted aroma combines with aged aromas - the highest realm of Eastern gentlemanly pairing. Brewing: 100°C water, quick rinse and fast pour, Yixing clay teapot.
Tea 3: Pu'er (Raw / Ripe)
Tea Character: Aged character, soil, medicinal aroma, deep and profound Cigar Pairing: Leather / earthy and powerful cigars
- Cohiba Behike BHK 56
- Bolívar Royal Coronas
- Padrón 1964 Anniversary
Why: Pu'er "age" pairs with cigar "age" - the flavors of time are added together. 10-year ripe Pu'er + 5-year-aged Cuban cigar = deep temporal resonance. Brewing: 100°C water, quick 5-10 second infusion, preferably with a Yixing clay teapot.

Tea 4: Lapsang Souchong / Jin Jun Mei (Chinese Black Tea)
Tea Character: Pine-smoke aroma, longan aroma, honeyed feel Cigar Pairing: Cream / honey profile
- Cohiba Siglo VI
- Davidoff Aniversario
- Padrón 1964 Maduro
Why: Pine-smoke aroma directly echoes the smoky aroma of cigars - while longan and honey notes add sweetness. Brewing: 95°C water, 2-3 minutes, porcelain teapot.
Tea 5: English Black Tea (Earl Grey, Darjeeling, Assam)
Tea Character: Bergamot, malt, pronounced tannins Cigar Pairing: Pepper / spice profile
- Partagás Serie D No.4
- My Father Le Bijou 1922
- Bolívar Belicosos Finos
Why: English black tea has strong tannins and can balance the peppery spice of cigars - a classic gentleman's club pairing. Brewing: 95°C water, 3-5 minutes, white porcelain cup.
Tea 6: Japanese Matcha / Gyokuro
Tea Character: Rich green tea, nori notes, umami, intense bittersweetness Cigar Pairing: Light creamy profile
- Macanudo Café
- Davidoff Signature 2000
- Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de San Juan
Why: Matcha umami with creamy cigars - fresh yet layered. A choice for the Zen-inspired Japanese-style gentleman.
⚠️ Do not pair matcha with powerful cigars - the bitterness of matcha will be completely overwhelmed by the cigar. Brewing: 80°C water, whisk with a matcha brush for 30 seconds.

The "Tea-Drinking Rhythm" With Cigars
- Smoke 2-3 puffs of the cigar → take 1 small sip of tea
- Replace the tea immediately once it cools (do not drink cold tea with a hot cigar)
- Do not pour too much tea (half a cup is ideal)
Cigar Prince's 3 Iron Rules for Tea and Cigar Pairing
- No sugar, no milk - this will disrupt the tannin combination between cigar + tea
- Brew fresh with boiling water, do not cold brew - only hot tea can resonate with a hot cigar
- Less tea than alcohol - tea is not for "drinking until full"; it is for "appreciation"
Conclusion
Tea is not "a second-best alternative to alcohol" - it is "another complete gentlemanly choice".
In Chinese culture, cigars truly become localized and truly gentlemanly only when they meet tea.
Next time, during a business meeting or after driving, smoke a cigar with a pot of Dong Ding Oolong - you will discover that a complete experience does not actually require whisky.
