The brand name comes from Havana's original Spanish colonial name San Cristóbal de la Habana - "Saint Christopher of Havana". When the Spanish founded the city in 1519, they used "San Cristóbal" (Saint Christopher) to commemorate Columbus, while "La Habana" was the local indigenous name.
The original four 1999 releases were all named after Spanish colonial-era fortresses that protected Havana: El Morro (Morro Castle, the most famous lighthouse fortress), La Fuerza (the oldest stone fortress in the Americas, construction began in 1558), La Punta (the small fortress at the entrance to Havana harbor), and El Príncipe (an inland fortress).
2004 5th Anniversary V Aniversario Humidor -- 500 numbered humidors, each with 100 cigars: 25 El Morro + 25 Mercaderes + 25 Muralla + 25 Oficios. 3 new sizes debuted: Mercaderes, Muralla, Oficios -- named after streets in Old Havana.
2019 was the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana (1519-2019) -- San Cristóbal de la Habana was selected as the commemorative brand, which was the most important honor in this brand's history -- this kind of commemorative status is usually given only to Cohiba or Montecristo.
1519 500 Aniversario Humidor (Roque, numbered humidor of 100 cigars, limited to 500) -- numbered from 1519 to 2019 -- commemorating the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana. Released at the end of 2021. It is the most precious limited release in the history of San Cristóbal.
San Cristóbal de la Habana was officially launched in Havana on November 20, 1999 - it was the 21st century's first new global Cuban cigar brand, and also the first completely new international brand to appear 33 years after Diplomáticos (1966).
20 Aniversario LCDH 2019 (Capuleto, 52 × 162mm) -- commemorates the brand's 20th anniversary. Wooden box in a "treasure chest" style, holding 20 cigars. Flavors: cream, honey, caramel, earth, spice.
El Morro (7" × 49, vitola: Prominentes, Double Corona) - A Double Corona-format flagship commemorating the Morro Castle lighthouse fortress. Discontinued in 2013, it was the first of the original four vitolas to be discontinued. Today, old El Morro is an object pursued by collectors.
Harimau Malaya RE Malasia 2020 (Montesco 55 × 130, 8,888×10) -- the first and to date only Cuban RE for the Malaysian market. 8,888 is an auspicious number for Chinese people. Harimau Malaya is the "Malayan tiger" in Malaysia's national coat of arms.
In 2006, Mercaderes, Muralla, and Oficios were officially launched as La Casa del Habano LCDH Exclusivo -- named after three historic streets in Old Havana (Mercaderes Merchant Street, Muralla City Wall Street, Oficios Workshop Street). The cigars have a La Casa del Habano second band. All three were discontinued in 2011, and are early classics of the brand's LCDH releases.
San Cristóbal de la Habana is produced at Havana's La Corona Factory (the same factory as Hoyo de Monterrey). All products are "totalmente a mano con tripa larga" (entirely handmade, long filler), with all tobacco from Vuelta Abajo.
San Cristóbal de la Habana flavor profile: light to medium strength -- cream, honey, caramel, light earth, gentle spice, cedar. It is one of the most balanced and elegant brands in the Habanos portfolio.
La Fuerza (5.7" × 50, vitola: Robustos Extra) - Commemorates Castillo de la Real Fuerza, the oldest stone fortress in the Americas (built 1558-1577). The Robusto Extra format is exclusive to San Cristóbal.
La Punta (5.2" × 52, vitola: Campana, Belicoso) - Commemorates La Punta, the small fortress opposite Morro Castle at the entrance to Havana harbor. The Belicoso format is a Cuban torpedo, with light to medium strength.
Torreón LCDH Exclusivo 2012 (Ceramic jar, 25 cigars, 2,000 sets) -- a ceramic jar packaging format rarely seen in the cigar industry. It was the first release of the Habanos Specialist Exclusive program. Early batches mistakenly carried the La Casa del Habano cigar band. Released in 2013.
San Cristóbal de la Habana has no historical baggage -- Habanos S.A. gave the cigar makers complete creative freedom. This brand is a testing ground for "modern Cuban cigar philosophy": not restricted by traditional blends, and able to be designed entirely according to contemporary tastes.
Particularly important for the Chinese market: Harimau Malaya is one of the few records of Cuba RE for the Southeast Asian market. The 8,888 limited-edition number, Malayan tiger theme, and complex outer-box packaging make it a cigar-history moment Asian collectors should not miss.
Before the revolution, there was another cigar brand called San Cristóbal de la Habana that was produced until the revolution. But today's San Cristóbal de la Habana is completely unrelated to the old brand; it is not a revival of the old brand - it is an entirely new creation.
O'Reilly Colección Habanos 2009 (book-shaped boîte nature box of 20, limited to 1,000) -- the 9th release in the Habanos Collection Series. Named after the Old Havana street Calle O'Reilly.
Cigar band design: compass rose motif + blue and gold color scheme -- reflecting the maritime history and tradition of Havana's port. It is the only brand in the cigar industry to use a nautical theme as its visual identity.
Today, three regular-production San Cristóbal de la Habana lines remain in production: El Príncipe, La Fuerza, La Punta -- plus 20 Aniversario LCDH and multiple Specialist Exclusive limited editions. The product line is small but refined.
Aged El Morro (produced before 2013) is a truly rare collectible - this Double Corona vitola, together with brand exclusivity and discontinuation, creates a triple rarity effect that makes it a dark horse in aged Cuban cigar collecting.
El Príncipe (vitola: Mareva, Petit Corona) - Commemorates the inland Castillo del Príncipe fortress. A smaller regular-production model, it is the brand's entry-level choice.
X Edición Festival del Habano 2009 (10 cigars per box, 20,000 sets) -- a replica of the commemorative item for the 10th Habanos Festival.
La Cabaña RE Cuba 2017 (Dobles, 10,000×10) -- a RE for the local Cuban market, commemorating the La Cabaña fortress. Released at the end of 2019.
El Morro (discontinued) and La Fuerza are two factory vitolas produced only by San Cristóbal -- no other Cuban brand has used them. These exclusive specifications give the brand a distinctive identity.
San Cristóbal de la Habana vitolas often receive 88-91 points in Cigar Aficionado ratings, making it one of the most consistently performing 'young brands'.
Prado Habanos Specialist Exclusive (Petite Pirámides) -- named after Havana's Paseo del Prado boulevard. Standard A band plus a gold Habanos Specialist Exclusive band.
San Cristóbal de la Habana is classified as Other within the Habanos system -- previously it was "Niche". Its market share is not large, but its positioning is distinctive, representing "modern-style Cuban cigars".
2009 was the brand's hot year for collecting: O'Reilly Colección Habanos (book-shaped) + X Edición Festival del Habano were released at the same time, reflecting Habanos's high level of attention to the brand.

Cigars Bearing Havana's Original Name
If Cohiba is the cigar of the Revolution, and Diplomáticos is the first commercial brand after the Revolution, then San Cristóbal de la Habana is the "cigar of the 21st century" -- officially launched in Havana on November 20, 1999, as the opening work of the new millennium.
The story begins in 1519. When the Spanish conquistador Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar founded a city on the northern coast of Cuba, he named it after the saint "San Cristóbal" (Saint Christopher, commemorating Columbus), and added the local Indigenous name for the place, "La Habana" -- the city's original full name was "San Cristóbal de la Habana".
Five hundred years later, in 1999, Habanos S.A. used this historic name for an entirely new cigar brand -- as a commemorative gift for the arrival of the millennium.
The First Global Cuban Cigar Brand of the 21st Century
San Cristóbal de la Habana holds a very distinctive place in cigar history:
- 33 years later than Diplomáticos (1966 -> 1999)
- The first new global brand after the commercialization of Cohiba (1982)
- The first new global Cuban cigar brand of the 21st century
This "brand-new" positioning gave Habanos complete creative freedom -- torcedores were not constrained by traditional blends and could design entirely according to contemporary tastes. San Cristóbal therefore became a testing ground for "modern Cuban cigar philosophy".
Before the Revolution, there had once been another cigar brand called San Cristóbal de la Habana, produced until the Revolution. But today's San Cristóbal de la Habana has no connection whatsoever with the old brand; it is not a revival of an old brand -- it is an entirely new creation.
The 4 Great Fortresses: The Naming Logic of the Original Vitolas
The original four releases from 1999 were all named after Spanish colonial fortresses that protected Havana:
El Morro (7" × 49, vitola: Prominentes, Double Corona) -- The Double Corona flagship format commemorating the lighthouse fortress of Morro Castle. Discontinued in 2013, it was the first of the original four vitolas to be discontinued. Today, old El Morro is an object pursued by collectors.
La Fuerza (5.7" × 50, vitola: Robustos Extra) -- Commemorating Castillo de la Real Fuerza, the oldest stone fortress in the Americas (built from 1558 to 1577, under the supervision of the renowned engineer Bartolomé Sánchez). The Robusto Extra format is exclusive to San Cristóbal.
La Punta (5.2" × 52, vitola: Campana, Belicoso) -- Commemorating La Punta, the small fortress opposite Morro Castle at the entrance to Havana harbor. A Cuban torpedo in Belicoso format, with light to medium strength.
El Príncipe (vitola: Mareva, Petit Corona) -- Commemorating the inland Castillo del Príncipe fortress. A smaller regular-production cigar and the brand's entry-level choice.
El Morro and La Fuerza are two factory vitolas produced only by San Cristóbal -- no other Cuban brand has used them. These exclusive formats give the brand a distinctive identity.
5th Anniversary: Named After Old Havana Streets
2004 5th Anniversary V Aniversario Humidor -- 500 numbered humidors, each containing 100 cigars: 25 El Morro + 25 Mercaderes + 25 Muralla + 25 Oficios. Three new sizes made their debut: Mercaderes, Muralla, Oficios -- named after streets in Old Havana.
From fortresses to streets -- San Cristóbal's naming logic expanded to the whole of Old Havana.
In 2006, Mercaderes (Merchants Street), Muralla (Wall Street), and Oficios (Workshop Street) were officially released as La Casa del Habano LCDH Exclusivo, with a second La Casa del Habano band. All three were discontinued in 2011, becoming early LCDH classics of the brand.
More limited releases named after Old Havana streets joined the lineup:
- O'Reilly Colección Habanos 2009 (Calle O'Reilly) -- A book-shaped box of 20 cigars, limited to 1,000; the 9th release in the Habanos Collection Series
- Prado Habanos Specialist Exclusive (Paseo del Prado avenue) -- Petite Pirámides
2012: The First Habanos Specialist Exclusive
Torreón LCDH Exclusivo 2012 (ceramic jar of 25 cigars, 2,000 sets) is a rare ceramic-jar presentation in the cigar world. It was the first release in the Habanos Specialist Exclusive program -- early batches were mistakenly fitted with the La Casa del Habano cigar band. Released in 2013.
This "Specialist Exclusive" program was a special release channel created by Habanos for top-tier distributors. San Cristóbal was the inaugural brand, reflecting the brand's special status within the Habanos system.
2019: The Highest Honor of the 500th Anniversary
The most important moment in the history of San Cristóbal de la Habana came in 2019 -- the 500th anniversary of the founding of the city of Havana (1519-2019).
This brand was selected as the commemorative brand -- an honor usually reserved for Cohiba or Montecristo. San Cristóbal was the first non-"Top Five Global Brand" in 60 years to receive this honor.
Two commemorative releases:
1519 500 Aniversario Humidor (Roque, numbered humidor of 100 cigars, limited to 500) -- Numbered from 1519 to 2019 -- commemorating the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana. Released at the end of 2021. It is the most precious limited release in the history of San Cristóbal, and its future collection value cannot be estimated.
20 Aniversario LCDH 2019 (Capuleto, 52 × 162mm) -- Commemorating the brand's 20th anniversary. A "treasure chest" style wooden box of 20 cigars. Flavor: cream, honey, caramel, earth, spice.
For a young brand (only 20 years old), being chosen as the commemorative brand for the city's 500th anniversary was an immense honor.
Harimau Malaya: Malaysia's Only RE
Harimau Malaya RE Malasia 2020 (Montesco 55 × 130, 8,888×10) -- the first and, to date, only Cuban RE for the Malaysian market.
- Limited to 8,888 cigars: an auspicious number in Chinese culture
- Harimau Malaya: the "Malayan tiger" on Malaysia's national emblem
- Complex outer-box packaging: commemorating Malaysian culture
For Asian Chinese collectors, this is one of the few records of a Cuba RE for the Southeast Asian market -- markets such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia have very rarely had dedicated releases within the Habanos RE system, making Harimau Malaya a rare exception.
Flavor: Modern Cuban Cigar Philosophy
The flavor of San Cristóbal de la Habana: light to medium strength -- cream, honey, caramel, gentle earth, light spice, and cedar. It is one of the most balanced and elegant brands in the Habanos portfolio.
This flavor reflects Habanos' "modernist" design thinking in 1999 -- not too strong (avoiding the Bolívar path), not too old-school (avoiding the Partagás path), but balanced and elegant, with a modern style suitable for any time and any occasion.
Cigar band design: compass rose motif + blue-and-gold color scheme -- reflecting the maritime historical tradition of Havana harbor. It is the only brand in the cigar industry to use a nautical theme as its visual identity.
All products are "totalmente a mano con tripa larga" (fully handmade, long filler), using all Vuelta Abajo tobacco, produced at La Corona Factory (the same factory as Hoyo de Monterrey).
What the Chinese-Language World Should Know About San Cristóbal
For Taiwanese, Hong Kong, and Malaysian Chinese enthusiasts:
-
Harimau Malaya is a "historical-moment cigar" for Southeast Asian enthusiasts: the first Cuba RE for the Malaysian market. For Southeast Asian Chinese, this is essential for collections -- limited to 8,888 cigars, themed around the Malayan tiger, and symbolizing Asian culture.
-
The 1519 500th Anniversary Humidor is a legendary collectible: 500 humidors numbered from 1519 to 2019, commemorating the 500th anniversary of the founding of Havana. Its future collection value cannot be estimated -- this kind of top-tier commemoration is usually reserved for Cohiba or Montecristo.
-
Old El Morro is a rare collectible: a discontinued Double Corona format from 2013, combined with brand exclusivity and the passage of time; this triple rarity effect has made aged El Morro a dark horse in the collection of aged Cuban cigars.
-
20 Aniversario LCDH is a prime LCDH collection choice: the "treasure chest" style wooden box gives it particular collection value. The 20th anniversary was a key moment in the brand's history.
-
Authenticity identification: the compass rose cigar band is the brand's core visual identifier. Counterfeits often show deviations in the details of the compass needles and the proportions of the blue-and-gold color scheme.
Why San Cristóbal Is the "Youngest Global Cuban Brand"
What makes San Cristóbal special is that it has no historical baggage.
While other Cuban brands are bound by their own histories (they must taste the way Cohiba should, or must be balanced like Montecristo) -- San Cristóbal started from zero and needed to do only one thing: create the flavor that modern cigar enthusiasts want.
For beginners, El Príncipe is one of the gentlest entry points into the world of Cuban cigars -- light to medium strength, without intimidating newcomers.
For seasoned connoisseurs, the 1519 500th Anniversary Humidor is the ultimate collectible, Harimau Malaya is a memory of Asian culture, and old El Morro is a rare collectible.
For Cuba factory-director-level enthusiasts, San Cristóbal has two unique values:
- It is the most complete "historical naming system" in the cigar world: from fortresses to streets, from the city's origin in 1519 to the city's 500th anniversary in 2019, every vitola carries a piece of Havana's history
- It proves that a young brand can also carry the most important history -- a 20-year-old brand was selected to commemorate the city's 500th anniversary, and that trust itself is the greatest honor
That "San Cristóbal de la Habana" founded by the Spanish on Cuba's northern coast in 1519 -- five hundred years later, it still continues on every cigar.
