Padrón - The Cigar Industry's Most Respected Family Dynasty
"Family Owned & Operated" - this is not a marketing slogan, but Padrón's core belief for 60 years.
From José Orlando Padrón starting out in Miami with USD 60 in relief money and a wooden hammer, to today's Nicaraguan cigar realm under the leadership of Jorge Padrón, Padrón is one of the few top-tier brands in the cigar industry that remains 100% family-owned.
1926-1962: The Exile Road of a Cuban Tobacco Farmer's Son
1926: Born in Pinar del Río
In 1926, José Orlando Padrón was born in Cuba's Pinar del Río province - the very province that is home to the famous Vuelta Abajo tobacco-growing region. The Padrón family had been tobacco farmers for generations. José grew up in the tobacco fields and understood the breathing of every leaf.
1959: The Castro Revolution, Tobacco Fields Confiscated
After the Cuban Revolution of 1959, the Castro government nationalized all privately owned tobacco fields - the Padrón family lost the tobacco land they had held for three generations. At age 33, José Orlando Padrón lost all of his property.
1961: Exile in Spain
In 1961, José went into exile in Spain - hoping to rebuild his cigar business there. But Spain's tobacco industry was monopolized by the state-owned Tabacalera, leaving limited room for private enterprise.
1962: Arrival in Miami
In 1962, José moved from Spain to Miami, United States - at the time, Miami was becoming the center of the Cuban exile community. José arrived in Calle Ocho, Miami (Little Havana), carrying the bloodline of a Cuban tobacco farmer and the craft of cigar making.
1964: The Legendary Beginning with USD 60 in Relief Money
1964 was the year a cigar-industry legend began:
- The U.S. government gave Cuban exiles USD 60 per month in relief money
- The 38-year-old José used this money to buy his first chaveta (cigar knife) + some tobacco leaves
- In a small workshop in Miami's Little Havana, he rolled the first Padrón cigar
- Padrón Cigars was officially established in 1964
The Story of the Wooden Hammer (The Beginning of the Legend)
"My father earned his first money with a wooden hammer" - Jorge Padrón has recounted this many times in interviews.
The story is that when José had just opened his shop in Miami, he did not have the money to buy a full set of cigar-making equipment. He used a handmade wooden hammer to pound tobacco leaves and prepare wrappers. When customers came into the shop and saw this wooden hammer, they regarded it as a symbol of traditional cigar craftsmanship - and made repeated offers to buy it. José refused to sell it, but whenever customers came in and saw the hammer, they would buy some Padrón cigars.
This wooden hammer is still displayed today in the Padrón family museum - a spiritual symbol of Padrón's rise from nothing.
1967-1979: Nicaraguan Foundations
1967: Beginning to Use Nicaraguan Tobacco
José first went to Nicaragua to purchase tobacco in 1967 - at the time, tobacco from Nicaragua's Estelí region was beginning to gain attention and was regarded as "the non-Cuban growing region with terroir closest to Cuba." José immediately fell in love with the Nicaraguan tobacco style of "earthy pepper, dark wood, and deep coffee."
1970: First Factory Established in Estelí, Nicaragua
In 1970, Padrón established its first factory in Estelí, Nicaragua - this was the key year when Padrón truly became a "cigar manufacturer" rather than merely a vendor. From then on, Padrón followed a fully independent path of "growing its own tobacco, rolling its own cigars, and selling its own products."
1979: The Nicaraguan Revolution
The Sandinista Revolution of 1979 - the Padrón factory was burned multiple times amid conflicts between the CIA and Sandinista guerrillas. The Padrón family lost some of its assets in Nicaragua, but José did not give up - in the 1980s, he rebuilt the Nicaraguan factory and began building Padrón's global sales network.
1980-2000: Golden Growth Period - 1964 Anniversary and 1926 Series
1989: Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series
In 1989, to commemorate Padrón's 25th anniversary - José launched the most important series in the brand's history:

1964 Anniversary No.4 (Toro 6" × 56) was Cigar Aficionado's 2003 Cigar of the Year - becoming the foundational work behind Padrón's global standing.
2002: Padrón 1926 Series - Honoring the Father's 80th Birthday
In 2002, to commemorate José Orlando Padrón's 80th birthday (1926 was his year of birth) - the 1926 Series was launched:

2009-2017: Second-Generation Succession - The Jorge Padrón Era
2009: José Retires, Jorge Takes Over
In 2009, José Orlando Padrón retired, passing leadership to his son Jorge Padrón. Jorge grew up between Miami and Nicaragua and began learning at the Padrón factory at age 16 - he was the successor trained personally by José.
2009: Padrón Family Reserve Series
Jorge's first product decision - the launch of the Padrón Family Reserve series:
- 44 Years (commemorating Padrón's 44th anniversary, 2008)
- 45 Years, 46 Years, 48 Years, 50 Years (limited anniversary releases each year)
- No.85 (commemorating José's 85th birthday, 2011)

2014: Padrón Damaso with Light Connecticut Shade Wrapper
The Damaso series was launched in 2014 - the first time in Padrón history that a light Connecticut Shade wrapper was used. It broke from Padrón's consistent dark Maduro / Sun Grown style - aimed at younger enthusiasts and lighter-profile aficionados.
2017: José Orlando Padrón Passes Away (Age 91)
In 2017, José Orlando Padrón passed away in Miami at the age of 91. The cigar industry held commemorations around the world.
The Padrón empire left behind by José grew from a wooden hammer + USD 60 in relief money into one of the most respected family brands in the cigar industry. Jorge Padrón continues to lead it - and to this day, Padrón remains 100% family-owned.

Castro
Padrón 1964 Anniversary — 25
Padrón 1926 Series —
No.1、No.2、No.6、No.9、No.35、No.40、No.48、No.90、80 Years 等 vitola。
Cigar Aficionado 2003 年雪茄 — Padrón 1964 No.4
Cigar Aficionado 2007 年雪茄 — Padrón 1926 No.9
José Orlando Padrón
