La Flor Dominicana -- Litto Gomez's Kingdom of Bold Innovation
Founded in 1994 by Litto Gomez (a Dominican of Spanish descent) and his wife Ines Gomez in La Canela, Dominican Republic -- it is one of the representative brands of the "21st-century Dominican cigar revolution."
If Davidoff represents "Dominican elegance," Arturo Fuente represents the "Dominican family dynasty," and Padrón represents "family excellence" -- then La Flor Dominicana represents "bold Dominican innovation".
Over 30 years, Litto Gomez turned a small brand founded in 1994 into a world-class cigar kingdom with the "Andalusian Bull, 2016 Cigar of the Year #1 (97 points)."
Founder: The Story of Litto Gomez
Litto Gomez is a Dominican of Spanish Canary Islands descent -- the Canary Islands are an important tobacco-growing region in Spain and also a place where many Cuban tobacco farmers went into exile after 1959.
Litto Gomez grew up in the Dominican Republic -- but he was in the gold and jewelry business, not cigars. In the 1990s, he began smoking cigars and studying cigars -- after falling in love with them, he decided to devote himself entirely to cigar making.
In 1994, he acquired a tobacco field and a small factory in La Canela, Dominican Republic -- founding La Flor Dominicana (abbreviated LFD). At the start, there was 0 marketing budget, 0 distribution network, and 0 name recognition -- it grew slowly through pure craftsmanship.
The First Decade (1994-2004): Coronado and the Ligero Series
Early La Flor Dominicana launched the Coronado series -- the brand's initial medium-strength line. But what truly made LFD famous was the Double Ligero series:
"Ligero" is the strongest and most nicotine-rich tobacco leaf in a cigar -- usually used in the filler to increase strength. But Litto Gomez boldly used 100% Ligero for the filler -- an unprecedented approach of "extreme strength" in the cigar industry.
Double Ligero was released in 2003 -- and immediately became the representative of the "strongest Dominican cigar." Many enthusiasts who previously smoked only full-strength Nicaraguan cigars discovered that the Dominican Republic could also produce ultimate strength -- LFD rewrote the stereotype of Dominican cigars as "elegant and mild."
The 2010s: The Battlefield of Innovative Shapes
Litto Gomez was not satisfied with making only strong cigars -- he began challenging the "aesthetics of shape" in the cigar industry.
Air Bender Chisel (2010): the world's first "chisel-shaped" cigar -- the head is a flat chisel shape (not the traditional round shape). This shape was personally designed by Litto Gomez -- making the burn at the head of the cigar more distinctive and allowing the flavors to unfold more slowly.
When this "chisel cigar" reached the market, it shook the entire cigar industry -- several media outlets called it "the Picasso of the cigar world."
The Air Bender series has received multiple 90+ scores from Cigar Aficionado -- it is the brand's representative series for "innovative shapes."
2016: Andalusian Bull Cigar of the Year #1 (97 Points)
Andalusian Bull was released in 2016 -- themed around the "Andalusian bullfight":
- Specs: Salomon (thick double-tapered shape, 9¼" × 64) -- a rare special vitola
- Wrapper: Nicaraguan Ecuadorian Habano (dark)
- Blend: Nicaraguan + Dominican mix
- Strength: Full strength
- Experience time: 90+ minutes
Cigar Aficionado named it the 2016 Cigar of the Year #1 (97 points) -- a historic victory for LFD.
The name "Andalusian Bull": pays tribute to Litto Gomez's Spanish Canary Islands heritage -- the Andalusian bullfight is one of the most famous traditions in Spanish culture.
This 97-point score transformed La Flor Dominicana from a "Dominican boutique brand" into a "world-class premium brand" -- placing it alongside Cohiba Behike, Padrón 1964, Arturo Fuente OpusX, and others as a "top non-Cuban cigar."
Sub-Brands: L'Atelier and La Volcada
L'Atelier (founded in 2012): a sub-brand of La Flor Dominicana -- "L'Atelier" means "workshop" in French:
- More experimental blends
- Limited small-batch production
- Multiple 90+ scores from Cigar Aficionado
La Volcada (2018): a limited series paying tribute to tango dance steps -- "Volcada" in Spanish refers to a "forward-leaning" movement in tango.
These sub-brands allow LFD to maintain the brand spirit of "always innovating."
A Family Kingdom with Fully Estate-Grown Tobacco
La Flor Dominicana is one of the few Dominican brands with "fully estate-grown tobacco":
- La Canela estate tobacco fields: 460 meters above sea level, Cibao Valley, Dominican Republic
- In-house fermentation facility: complete 6-12 month fermentation process
- In-house factory: Tabacalera La Flor S.A.
This "Seed-to-Smoke" integrated process gives LFD complete control over quality -- a standard configuration among family dynasty brands such as Padrón and Arturo Fuente.
The Family Legacy of Litto Gomez and Ines Gomez
Litto Gomez and his wife Ines Gomez run LFD together -- Ines is responsible for marketing and design, while Litto is responsible for blends and production.
Their son Tony Gomez and daughter Ileana Gomez have both joined the family business -- ensuring the brand enters its second generation.
It is the "new-generation Dominican family dynasty" following Padrón, Arturo Fuente, and Plasencia.
