Joya de Nicaragua - 1968, the Origin of Nicaraguan Cigars
Founded in 1968 by Cuban exile entrepreneurs Simón Camacho and Juan Francisco Bermejo - it is Nicaragua's first premium cigar brand and the true origin of the "non-Cuban cigar revolution."
Before Padrón, Plasencia, and Drew Estate - it was Joya de Nicaragua that proved "Nicaragua can make cigars capable of challenging Cuban cigars." Without Joya de Nicaragua, there would be no Padrón 1964 Anniversary, My Father Le Bijou 1922, or Liga Privada No.9 today - the entire Nicaraguan cigar industry was built upon the foundation pioneered by Joya de Nicaragua.
Origin: Cuban Exile After the 1959 Revolution
After the 1959 Castro Revolution succeeded, multiple Cuban cigar families went into exile overseas:
- Padrón family - exiled to Miami, later to Nicaragua
- Plasencia family - exiled to Nicaragua
- Menéndez family (Montecristo) - exiled to the Dominican Republic + Canary Islands
- Cifuentes family (Partagás) - exiled to the Dominican Republic
But the first to decide to "rebuild Cuban cigar tradition in Nicaragua" was Simón Camacho - in 1968, he went to Estelí, Nicaragua, to establish a factory and invited veteran Cuban tobacco farmers to jointly create Joya de Nicaragua.
"Joya de Nicaragua" means "the jewel of Nicaragua" in Spanish - the brand name plainly declares: "Nicaragua deserves to have its own premium cigar brand."
The First Decade (1968-1979): Reagan's Presidential Cigar
Joya de Nicaragua became a "U.S. presidential cigar" in the 1970s:
- President Lyndon B. Johnson (1963-1969) enjoyed smoking Joya de Nicaragua
- President Richard Nixon (1969-1974) gave Joya de Nicaragua to foreign leaders visiting the United States
- President Ronald Reagan (1981-1989) especially enjoyed the Antaño series
Why presidents chose Joya de Nicaragua:
- Craftsmanship from Cuban exile families - preserving Cuban tradition
- The U.S. embargo against Cuba (from 1962) - American political circles could not legally obtain Cuban cigars
- Nicaraguan terroir - volcanic soil and tropical climate similar to Cuba's Vuelta Abajo
The 1970s were Joya de Nicaragua's first golden age - exported to 30+ countries worldwide, it was the "legal alternative for American cigar enthusiasts."
The 1979 Sandinista Revolution: The First Major Crisis
In 1979, the Sandinista communist revolution succeeded - Nicaragua fell into a 10-year civil war (Contra War):
- Multiple cigar factories were burned down or requisitioned
- Tobacco farmers were conscripted
- Cigar exports nearly came to a halt
- The Joya de Nicaragua factory was burned down twice in the 1980s
Those 10 years nearly collapsed Nicaragua's cigar industry - many competing brands simply gave up. But Joya de Nicaragua persisted - it was one of the very few surviving brands.
The civil war ended in 1990 - Joya de Nicaragua began rebuilding.
The 1990s-2000s: The Birth of Antaño 1970
Joya de Nicaragua rebuilt in the 1990s - the Estelí factory resumed operations.
In 2002, the flagship series Antaño 1970 was released - "Antaño" means "in former times" in Spanish, while "1970" commemorates the brand's golden age:
- Blend: Nicaraguan Cuban-seed Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, Nicaraguan Estelí + Jalapa + Condega three-region filler
- Strength: Full - at the time, it was the strongest Nicaraguan cigar on the market
- Flavor: black pepper, dark cocoa, leather, espresso, earth, cedar
Antaño 1970 immediately became an essential cigar for full-strength enthusiasts to appreciate - Cigar Aficionado rated it 90+ points multiple times.
50th Anniversary in 2008: La Cabinetta
In 2008, Joya de Nicaragua released Cabinetta for its 50th anniversary - an attempt to challenge the Cuban-style medium-strength category:
- Wrapper: Ecuador Connecticut Shade (light-colored)
- Blend: Nicaraguan + Dominican filler
- Strength: medium
- Flavor: creamy floral notes, cedar, light coffee - "elegant like a Cuban cigar"
It was Joya de Nicaragua's response to the stereotype that it "can only make full-strength cigars."
The 2010s: Cuatro Cinco and Numero Uno
Cuatro Cinco (2014): a limited series commemorating the founder's 45th anniversary - "Cuatro Cinco" means "4-5" in Spanish, paying tribute to the 45 years after 1968.
Numero Uno (2016): pays tribute to Ernest Hemingway's spirit as the "No.1 cigar enthusiast":
- Hemingway lived in Cuba from 1956 to 1960 - he was the most famous cigar enthusiast of the time
- The Numero Uno series was inspired by the vitola Hemingway last smoked in Cuba in 1959
- Cigar Aficionado named it one of the Top 25 Cigars of 2018
Status Today (2026)
Joya de Nicaragua is:
- Nicaragua's first premium cigar brand (1968)
- One of the very few Nicaraguan cigar brands to survive the 1979 revolution
- A cigar used by 3 U.S. presidents (Johnson, Nixon, Reagan)
- The spiritual leader of the contemporary Nicaraguan cigar revolution
Antaño 1970 flagship + Cabinetta medium elegance + Numero Uno Hemingway tribute + Cuatro Cinco 50th anniversary commemoration - it is the representative brand of the "complete spectrum of Nicaraguan cigars."

In-Depth Look at Nicaragua's Three Major Tobacco Regions
Joya de Nicaragua uses tobacco from Nicaragua's three major regions at the same time - this is a rare craft of "three-region integration":
Estelí - Strength and Depth
Located in northern Nicaragua - it is the center of Nicaragua's cigar industry. It has the highest strength and richest flavor - it is the tobacco source for "full-strength cigars."
- Volcanic ash soil
- Less rainfall
- Intense sunlight
- Characteristics of the tobacco produced: black pepper, dark cocoa, leather
Jalapa - Elegance and Creaminess
Located in the northwestern mountains of Nicaragua - with higher altitude and lower temperatures. The flavor is more elegant, with pronounced creamy floral notes - it is the tobacco source for "medium-strength" cigars.
- High-altitude mountains
- Moderate rainfall
- Gentle sunlight
- Characteristics of the tobacco produced: cream, cedar, floral notes
Condega - Balance and Complexity
Located between Estelí and Jalapa - its climate falls between the two. The flavor is balanced and highly complex - it is the tobacco source for "balanced cigars."
- Medium altitude
- Ample rainfall + sunlight
- Characteristics of the tobacco produced: coffee, cream, light cocoa, balance
Three-region integration allows Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 to have "the strength of Estelí + the elegance of Jalapa + the balance of Condega" at the same time - a level of complexity that other single-region Nicaraguan cigars cannot achieve.
Specific Stories of President Reagan and Joya de Nicaragua
During Ronald Reagan's term from 1981 to 1989 - the White House procured the Joya de Nicaragua Antaño series multiple times:
- In 1985, Reagan received Gorbachev at the White House - the cigar for the meeting that day was Joya de Nicaragua
- After the 1986 Iran-Contra scandal, Reagan still insisted on supporting Nicaraguan cigars - an expression of a political stance "against the Sandinista communist regime"
- In 1987, Reagan donated to the Joya de Nicaragua factory - supporting the brand's rebuilding during the civil war
These stories make Antaño 1970 more than a cigar - it is a "political symbol" of the Cold War era.
