Don Pepin Garcia -- The Continuation of Cuban Master Craftsmanship in Nicaragua
"Don Pepin" is José García's nickname (in Spanish, "Pepin" is a diminutive of "José")--Don is an honorific in Spanish meaning "Mister".
The name "Don Pepin Garcia" is synonymous in cigar circles with "Cuban Habanos master craftsmanship"--he is the father of one of the few cigar families to have come out of Cuban Habanos factories and rebuilt Cuban tradition in Nicaragua.
Origins: 30 Years of Experience in Cuban Habanos Factories
José García was born in Cuba in the 1950s--the third generation of a Cuban tobacco-farming family. After the 1959 Revolution, he chose to remain in Cuba--accumulating 30 years of cigar-making experience across multiple Habanos factories, including H. Upmann, Partagás, and Romeo y Julieta.
In the 1990s, Cuba's economy entered the "Special Period"--after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Cuban economy fell apart, and the cigar industry barely continued operating. Don Pepin decided to leave Cuba in 2001--bringing 30 years of craftsmanship experience to Miami.
First Stop: El Rey de los Habanos in Miami (2002)
In 2002, Don Pepin established the El Rey de los Habanos factory in Miami's Little Havana district--the name means "King of Habanos".
