Arturo Fuente -- The Dominican King, a Generational Faith in Tobacco
"Hand Made -- One at a Time" -- this is Arturo Fuente's promise to cigars, and the Fuente family's 113-year commitment to craftsmanship.
From a Cuban exile family starting in Tampa in 1912 with a bundle of tobacco, to today's globally recognized "King of Dominican Cigars" -- Arturo Fuente is one of the cigar industry's most legendary brands in terms of family continuity.
1887-1912: From Cuban Exile to Tampa
1887: Arturo Fuente Is Born (Cuba)
Arturo Fuente was born in Cuba in 1887 -- of Spanish and Cuban heritage. The Fuente family was involved in the tobacco trade in Havana.
1902: Exile to Tampa, Florida
In 1902, the Fuente family went into exile in Tampa, United States -- at the time, Tampa was the "Cigar Capital of America" (Cigar City), with hundreds of cigar factories and more than 25,000 Cuban cigar workers. Tampa's Ybor City district was then the largest Cuban cigar manufacturing center in North America.
At age 15, Arturo became an apprentice in a Tampa cigar factory.
1912: Arturo Fuente Cigars Is Born
In 1912, Arturo Fuente (age 25) founded A. Fuente Cigars in Tampa -- specializing in "Tampa Clear Havana" cigars (made in Tampa with Cuban tobacco).
At the time, A. Fuente Cigars was one of more than 250 cigar brands in Tampa -- not a leading brand, but one with its own loyal customers.
1924-1957: The Fire and 33 Silent Years
1924: The Tampa Factory Fire
In 1924, the Arturo Fuente factory suffered a devastating fire -- all equipment, tobacco inventory, and customer records were completely burned. Arturo Fuente lost all his property overnight.
After this fire, A. Fuente Cigars fell silent for 33 years -- Arturo took odd jobs, and the family fell into hardship.
1957: Son Carlos Fuente Sr. Rebuilds the Brand
In 1957, Arturo's son Carlos Fuente Sr. (age 22) decided to rebuild the family cigar brand -- in a small garage in Tampa.
Conditions at the time were even more difficult than in 1912:
- No capital (the family's finances had only just recovered from the 1924 fire)
- No raw materials (Cuban tobacco was cut off after the 1962 U.S. embargo against Cuba)
- No market (Tampa's cigar industry had already declined in the 1950s)
But Carlos Sr. had one thing: his father Arturo's cigar-making formula.
1962-1980: Difficult Years Searching for New Tobacco Origins
1962: The U.S. Embargo Against Cuba Begins
In 1962, the United States imposed an embargo on Cuba -- A. Fuente lost its supply of Cuban tobacco. Carlos Sr. had to look for alternative tobacco origins:
- 1962-1968: experimented with Nicaragua (but instability caused by the Sandinista revolution made it unreliable)
- 1968-1980: experimented with Honduras (the flavor was comparatively rugged and did not match Fuente's stylistic pursuit)
1980: Relocation to Santiago, Dominican Republic
In 1980, Carlos Sr. moved the factory to Santiago, Dominican Republic -- the Santiago area of the Cibao Valley is widely recognized in the cigar industry as the non-Cuban region closest in style to Cuba's Vuelta Abajo.
This was the turning point in the Fuente family's destiny -- the Dominican Republic became Fuente's second homeland and remains its manufacturing base to this day.
1980-1995: The Cigar Revolution of Third-Generation Carlos Fuente Jr.
Carlos 'Carlito' Fuente Jr. (born 1954)
Carlos Fuente Jr. began learning in his father's factory at age 16 -- he is a true cigar craftsman who grew up in the factory. Carlito had absolute faith in the "potential of Dominican tobacco" -- he believed the Dominican Republic could make "better cigars than Cuban cigars."
1983: Hemingway Series Launch
Carlito's first legendary product -- the Hemingway Series (a tribute to writer Ernest Hemingway):
- Hemingway Short Story (4" × 49 figurado)
- Hemingway Best Seller (5¼" × 55 figurado)
- Hemingway Classic (7" × 48 figurado)
- Hemingway Masterpiece (9" × 52 figurado)
- Hemingway Signature (6" × 47 figurado)
All use the figurado vitola -- demonstrating Carlito's commitment to "classical cigar shapes." The flavor is medium in strength, with cream, coffee, and floral notes -- one of the cigar industry's most consistent brand series.
1995: Fuente Fuente OpusX -- A Sacred Object of the Cigar Industry Is Born
Chateau de la Fuente Tobacco Fields
In the 1990s, Carlito began establishing the Chateau de la Fuente tobacco fields in the El Caribe area of the Dominican Republic -- the goal: to grow "Cuban-quality" Dominican tobacco.
At the time, the cigar industry generally believed that "the Dominican Republic could not grow tobacco suitable for wrapper" -- all Dominican cigars used imported wrappers such as Connecticut Shade, Cameroon, and Sumatra.
Carlito experimented for 5 years -- and finally, in 1995, grew Dominican tobacco that could be used as wrapper.
Fuente Fuente OpusX Launch
In 1995, Carlito launched Fuente Fuente OpusX -- the first high-end "fully Dominican puro" cigar in history:
- Wrapper: Dominican Chateau de la Fuente tobacco (estate-grown)
- Binder: Dominican tobacco
- Filler: Dominican tobacco
- 100% Dominican Republic
This was a revolution in the cigar industry -- OpusX proved that the Dominican Republic could make fully puro, world-class premium cigars.

Cigar Aficionado: multiple scores of 95+ points Global price: USD 25-150 per cigar Feature: global supply is extremely limited, with annual production accounting for only 5% of Fuente's total output -- one of the rarest regular-production cigars in the cigar industry.

From W Cigar Bar Gentlemen's Cigar Lounge
W Cigar Bar is an authorized dealer of Pacific Cigar Company (PCC, the official Habanos S.A. import channel for Cuba in Taiwan) -- primarily supplying Cuban series. Arturo Fuente in Taiwan is supplied by Fuente-authorized distributors -- because OpusX production is scarce, supply in the Taiwan market is limited.
For enthusiasts: "After Cohiba Behike BHK 56 + Davidoff Royal Salomones, then Fuente Fuente OpusX" forms the most complete comparison set for experiencing the "world's three great top-tier cigar family dynasties."
Arturo Fuente is "the revolutionary of faith in Dominican tobacco" -- OpusX proved that "Cuban is not the only answer to cigar quality." At W Cigar Bar in Da'an District, the Cigar Prince Wilson Tsai presents this subject for appreciation together with cigar enthusiasts.
