From a startup founded by two young New Yorkers in a Manhattan basement in 1996 to today's largest premium cigar factory in Nicaragua, Drew Estate has been one of the most important American revolutionary brands in the cigar industry over the past nearly 30 years.

1996-1998: Two Young Men in Manhattan, New York

Founder Backgrounds

Jonathan Drew (born 1972) -- New York University graduate, majoring in business
Marvin Samel (of the same generation) -- New York businessman

The two met at a small cigar shop in Manhattan, New York. Both were young participants in the cigar boom of the 1990s. They were dissatisfied with mainstream Cuban / Dominican cigars and wanted to make "a different kind of cigar".

1996: Drew Estate Founded in New York

In 1996, Drew Estate Cigars was founded in a basement in Manhattan, New York. At the time, the two founders were 24-25 years old and had no cigar-manufacturing experience. Their funding came from small family investments and bank loans.

The first two years (1996-1998) were almost a failure. They attempted to manufacture traditional cigars in the Dominican Republic but could not compete with established brands such as Davidoff and Fuente.

1998: Move to Estelí, Nicaragua

In 1998, Jonathan + Marvin decided to go all-in and move to Estelí, Nicaragua:

  • They rented a small factory in Estelí
  • They hired local master blenders and cigar workers
  • They decided to do "something no one had done before" -- infused cigars

1998-2003: The ACID Series Revolution
